This is ugly, raw and oozes with malevolent dissonance. That being said, the drum work is horrible, even for this type of music.

Cool review Goat.

Agreed, cotb. Thanks for sending this album my way a while back too. Much like Vampires of Black Imperial Blood, I don't reach for this stuff often...but when it does, it consumes me. The guitar tone and those open chords is just a devastating combination. Not sure how some of these current well-produced, well-drummed 'depressive' black metal bands could ever hope to match To The Memory Of The Dark Countess. Nice review, Z.

Just got done listening to Desecrate Jesus's name and Black Wind of War, and The Hanged Priest and this guy really can devise some menacing riffs. His vocals are also above average with that gurgling rasp, I'll have to trade some stuff for this album but its worth it. Great review.

This is probably my favourite French BM album, despite the shitty drumming.

I'd almost rate this as a classic

Yes, probably it's a classic. The best that came of the Les Legions Noires movement. Most of them are just mediocre BM with horrible production and like 100 copies of their albums; but Mutiilation is really good. It took me a while to get accustomed to the vocals, though (not as much as it took me to get into Inquisition...)

Edit: Didn't know that LLN where a bunch of straightedge dumbasses... (in regard to the pharagraph where you mention that William was expelled from the movement for consuming heroin). That explains why his music is good and the rest of the LLN is quite mediocre.

Well, that's just the rumour - hard to verify from a bunch of secretive Satanists!

The only other LLN release I've heard of that gets similar amounts of praise is the Vlad Tepes/Belketre split.

I've had this for some time now and I was surprised to see it in the reviews this week as I had figured it had already been reviewed long ago. Some of the vocals on here are just phenomenal. 76/100 for me

This thread was about Mutilliation. Have you an opinion on this album?

Dimmu Borgir are talented but write shit music. This dude here was a talentless hack but wrote amazing music.

Understand the mechanics of black metal now, husky boy?

You can't adequately compare the two at all, Mutilation play black metal and Nu-Borgir play symphonic deathcore. Dimmu used to compose decent melodic black metal in the vein of Naglfar, but even then the two bands come from two different styles. I guess if I speak Husker fluently, open note chugging with massively overdone symphonic background combined with robot vocals make a talented band. I guess that means Winds of Plague should continue to influence them.
