Been meaning to write-up Tristania's gaps here for a while, so this project was an interesting find. The tracks I've heard are great; nice review, Alex.

I've only heard the two MySpace tracks, but this sounds like what Morten initially stated Sirenia was going to be—and was, actually, on the first two albums. While I like Nine Destinies and 13th Floor, we all know they're drenched in goth pop.

I wonder, though, why Morten simply didn't make this a Sirenia album.

A good review.
Being a huge fan of his early works and gothic metal in general, I'd still say you rated this album too high. Sure, compared to his latest works this one is more faithful to the genre, but still, having said (by Veland) that the album is early Tristania's style, doesn't mean it actually is. It doesn't get even near the atmosphere of darkness, mystery and intensity of Widow's Weeds and Beyond the Veil.

btw,
It's strange you didn't mention The Sins of thy Beloved as one of the major pioneers of the scene.

Anus,
After Sirenia's Enigma of Life is released, I think it got clear that Sirenia had chose the poppy-goth direction, while all his heavy ideas he throws at Mortemia.
