good review.

agree - i had huge hopes for this album, but it's rather torturous to even get through. Very boring and listless.

On this one I think you are wrong. This is not their best album, but it has its moments. Gods and Punks is a killer song.

Wow. This is a fantastic album. Yeah, it's not as in-your-face rockin' as their 90s stuff, but they also had big production budgets back then that allowed the band to have that huge sound. If people paid for music, this wouldn't be an issue.

But maybe it's also the fact that Dave is older now, and sober. I've always wondered why fans find no issues with change when it comes to themselves, but the moment a musician changes, mellows with age, people get pissy. Not saying this is how this review comes across, but a lot of fans have been complaining about these last two albums being too mellow.

Man, that's what fucking happens to people.

And Dave's lyrics have always been rather juvenile. No sense in pointing that out now. Haha.

Either way, I love this one. Nice mix of rockers and slower jams.

What the hell does having a big production budget have to do with making a great album? I've reviewed plenty of bands in the past year that had close to no production budget and they still managed to produce kickass albums, so that's a retarded excuse.

I agree that the sound and pace of this album definitely has to do with Dave getting older and changing. I have no problem with that. The problem here isn't mellowness, it's that it's boring mellowness.

At the end of the day it's still not a terrible album, most of it just is not what I expect to hear when I put on Monster Magnet, a band that has many years of creating interesting material behind them.

You should know better then this. This is Ken for crying out loud. He likes to spout off nonsense and bullshit just to show everyone that his opinion still counts around here

I agree. An album's production is solely dependent upon the engineering knowledge of the people involved. Some are terrific on their own with almost no equipment and some people MUST hire a 50,000 producer and all his gadgets or they are gonna suck. Rick Rubin has ruined more albums than he has improved. A big producer usually means big promotion too, so that is generally a good enough reason to get a guy to work the album. Rubin's clout at the corporate level is the sole reason anyone ever hired him to produce. Everyone knows he sucks ass. Maybe SA is talking about that. Budget means anything from the gear to who gets hired and those are big obstacles for some people.

As far as the songwriting I certainly don't think people mellow out with age. I think people become lazy and complacent songwriters or subconsciously don't want to work hard. People that like to work hard and become better at their craft don't get "laid back" with age. Maturity is one thing, laziness is another.

That is well said for any artist or genre of music. The question is many times it becomes difficult to really distinguish the two.
I like that statement tho it can be applied to nearly many facets of life.

If you know the album, Rush's Presto is the definition of a laid back and mature record. There isn't anything lazy about it whatsoever. All three guys laid down tons of tracks, really focused on the songwriting, ect.

You are right. It's such a fine line and distinction. Sometimes it is obvious, sometimes not.
