An Excellent review for a project that has done a lot for black metal. I haven't heard Belus yet but I'm sure it's decent, I'll check it out and review it this weekend.

Great review Zad. The only downside i found was again the entire first paragraph only talking about Varg, but i guess its completely impossible not to. Only a mention of a phrase or two would have been enough tough. Gonna give this a shot and keep up the good work :dio: (sorry for the bad english)

Heh, dunno about this. Think I agree with your initial impressions rather than the ones you have now, although maybe that's because I haven't listened to it much myself yet. Was listening to it whilst doing the shopping today and thought- black metal has moved beyond this. It was edgy and oppressive when this ultra-minimalist stuff started but now there are bands playing stuff that is just more interesting.

But maybe that's because I listened to it on headphones in the supermarket... hardly conducive to getting the full effect.

Well after a few listen i must say I'm a little disappointed  It's like the magic and surrealist feeling of the first four was absent... and I'm not sayin that this is bad(I would consider this a classic compared to Daudi Bladrs) but there is something obviously missing and its hurts bad the album. Maybe it will grow on me but right now I would give it a 65/100 at best.

I have listened to this album a lot, and yes, it took its time and I was disappointed at first. Of course, other bands do better things, but that doesn't stop this being very good in its own rights.

Excellent review for a very impressive album. I'm surprised at how good it is, really, especially after Varg's lengthy time in prison. It's flawed, but still very good, and at moments it really does sound like it could hold its own with the classics. I'm hoping for a steady stream of new Burzum albums within the next few years that'll improve upon Belus, and I'm guessing that's exactly what Varg is going to give us.

I still just can't get past how straight forward this is. After all those years in prison, and after all of the negative talk about the black metal scene, he puts out one of the most cliche examples of black metal I have heard in a long time. Its not that it strikes me as bad or anything, just kind of dull.

Your writing has really grown, Zad, great job here.

I essentially agree with your second impression and the rating score, though I might have taken a couple more points off.

There are a lot more interesting BM acts out there now, but hey, I think this is pretty good, even if it is no HLTO. The key will be the next album.

I listened to this several times and agree with the score. It's a solid album, some good riffs, the spoken passage parts are really cool. The vocals are the best he's ever done. The production is cool and doesn't detract from the music at all. Not much else to say really, nothing groundbreaking but a good listen with a few great riffs in there. Can't really ask for more these days.

I refuse to support anything this man says or does. It's as simple as that. I don't care if the album is good or bad. This man has his own personal beliefs, and certainly he's entitled to those, but when your philosophy is based in large part on hatred, your message deserves less press than others. By purchasing his albums or giving any ear service to any creation of his, I feel like I would be supporting what he does, directly or indirectly. And I will not be a party to such things.

I was going to start on about people supporting the music of anti-women/anti-gay and in some cases murderer rappers, but that argument hasn't been worth the effort for years.

The guy has a fucking farm he lives in. It's not like the album money goes to the NS party. It's not like you will buy the album anyway, but not even listening to this based on that is ridiculous.

Correct. I wonder what he was trying to pull off with that poorly worded anti-racist banter above.

Bah, I can sympathise completely with Holy Terror. I listen to Burzum very occasionally but have pretty much stopped listening to NS black metal entirely over recent years. Also stuff like Arghoslent, which riff-wise I think is great but gives me absolutely no joy to listen to any more. I no longer feel like I can, or even want to, separate music and the values that go into it.

I mean, if I found out Varg was at home listening to some awesome jazz or some lefty punk bands... I would be surprised, and possibly think he was a bit of a hypocrite.
