i heard this like a yearo ago and didn't like it much. but lately i've been looking for some Pelicanish stuff and saw how these guys smile in their promo pics (which makes them pretty much cool) so i downloaded it again. great stuff; tends to stick to the soft-loud formula, but it has very tight musicianship, good melodies and awesome production (very warm guitars and the drums sound awesome). and doesn't sound as much like Pelican as i remember (not nearly as metal, much less sloppy/sludgy)

i can't decide whether the vocals on "Built Without Hands" are awesome or awful, and reading that it's Peter Dolving isn't surprising; i have roughly the same opinion of his singing in The Haunted.

I could care less if I get bashed for how and why I write my reviews, but one of the most disappointing experiences has been the fact that when I think I have uncovered a truly good listening experience and am trying to tell about it here on MR, I get so few returning comments sometimes. Glad you got around to this album. I do not like the vocals much on that track. Their instrumentals are so entrancing, the vocals sound almost unnecessary regardless of who delivers them.

yeah they do sound pretty out of place. there's the samples of people talking earlier on the album, and when the vocals first came in i thought it was just another one of those; then slowly i realized it was actual singing.
