Man oh man, when I go visit my parents' house in a few weeks I'm going to root through my old copies of Metal Hammer rotting in a box somewhere and find their review of this album when it first came out. It's right up there with the Gorguts review on this site. Essentially it says "this album sounds exactly like any other Swedish death metal band and has no distinguishing characteristics whatsoever. It is completely predictable and Opeth are going nowhere". If I remember to do so I shall post it up here for the lulz.

Amazing album, a real masterpiece and Opeth's second best, IMO. Still can't compete with Morningrise, which incidentally is the only metal t-shirt I'm allowed to wear in public by my girlfriend :P

It does have flaws, the main one being that the lyrics are really terrible, IMO. I'm looking at you, Face of Melinda.

"She'd sworn her vows to another,
This is when noone will bother"

The lyrics on Morningrise are great, btw, and the whole album drips with melancholy, which this one can't quite recapture.

But still it deserves classic status and will totally get it as time goes by.

And it looks like Opeth have found their winning ways again with Watershed after a slightly mediocre patch (Deliverance, Damnation and Ghost Reveries are not up to the rest of their catalogue IMO)

Good archive review.

This is the only Opeth album that i havent heard with Deliverance. My favourite from them is Orchid and Morningrise very close second...

Crappy bands, eh? This is coming from someone who gave Slipknot's Vol.3 album a 100/100. If you were running the site, nothing good would be reviewed at all.

Anyhow, it's a good review, Zad. I have yet to listen to this album -- let alone any of Opeth's earlier outputs. Guess it's time to start saving up again...

I tried Blackwater Park once... Which never clicked for me at all... Is this a better place to start?

I suggest you start with Morningrise then this one. They are both amazing albums and IMO better than what they're making these days and Blackwater Park.

Naaa I gave that 100/100 cuz so many people give it a shit review..so I want to even it out? big deal? that album is like a 65/70/100

Every week metalreviews is late with albums...How come the week after watershed is released we get a review for still life? And just cuz OMG I gave Slipknot a high score..I must not know about metal...go screw. I used to despise them but vol. 3 is alot better then you'd think.

I was going to ask if you were five years old with the mental capacity of a rock, but the first paragraph of your post answered both questions. Thanks.

What's funny is, you're defeating your own purpose. The core of your qualm has some merit, but no one is going to give your bitching a second thought if you start out by calling the review choices "shit". If this site is so unbearable for you, no one is forcing you to be here (translation = GO AWAY!!).

Zad,

Thanks for giving this album the credit it deserves. A well written review of an album that within a few years will be held a true classic. Kudos.

Jason.
