Nah, I think it has more to do with the way I come across than anything. The only thing I can do, which I have, is say, "Hey, music is my first love. It's what drives me, what keeps me whole, inspires me, lifts me when I'm depressed, yadda-yadda..." If I come across as a little too forthright, my apologies. I don't think anyone's opinion is less valid than my own if it's an opinion and not some direct contradiction to fact (i.e. Ken only reviews nu-metal or pop shite, etc.).

Music is my love and I will defend her to the death.

I know what you mean. If there's a reason I didn't kill myself in the last week or two, it's due to the ginormous amounts of PM I've been cramming my ears with. And I know we're not the only ones who think so, I'm sure most agree just won't admit it.

And dude! stop saying that or I'll put it in my sig!

I have been using smilies, it hasn't helped! Hehehe. Seriously. And I've learned a great deal from your suggestions, too, my man. That's what it's all about.

Nothing helps! :D Glad to hear it. Ay-men.

IDM strikes me as a contradictio in adjecto, but make no mistake. This is actually quite good. I do think however, that it needs a little emotional punch (based on my limited experience which consists of the song Misha posted in the goosebumps thread and the samples from the website). I might check them out properly at another time. Their address is only a few blocks from here, so it should be possible to get their material.

I agree with you, but I must also note that it seems to take some time listening to a genre before you can dig out the intended emotion. I remember when I first listened to black metal like Burzum, I didn't hear any of its emotion and beauty.

Yes. You are right. When I have been 'learning' the form of expression of a new genre I have often grabbed the classics first. Just seems like an obvious choice of order. What are considered the classics of a genre like IDM?

It took me quite a while to fully experience the impact of a genre like neo-folk, while other genres like black metal and post-rock struck me pretty instant, so there is differences from genre to genre as well I guess.

Start with Warp's (the label) Artificial Intelligence compilation. Then you can move onto:
Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album
Autechre - Amber
I think you'd better ask Jochen (Open Mind) for the real recommendations.
