In order to understand how talented this guy is, you have to see him live. He knows how to work the crowd like almost nobody I've ever seen. He's so fuckin charismatic, it's nearly ridiculous.
Well the mistake made is assuming that I haven't seen them live. If you watch the DVD from the 2003 New England Metalfest, I can actually be seen for a few seconds when they pull off their "The Walls of Death" gimmick. I saw them again at this summers Ozzfest when they did the same thing. I even had the opportunity to see them a third time this month when they played with Bodom and Fear Factory but my friends and I left before they came on because we'd all seen them and were of the opinion that they sucked.
Modern psychiatry has shown that a crowd of people will do virtually anything asked of them by someone on a stage. The adage of what you say to 10 people might sound asinine but when you say it to 1000 people it becomes plausible. Ergo, working a crowd doesn't mean vocal talent.
I'm not knocking his vocal stamina because it is difficult to perform each night, especially when you're blasting out your vocal chords (I'm studying those damn things in med school now and it's giving me flashbacks). The point is that his vocals are a smidgeon above hardcore. It's pretty much still the shout attack with more low end. I can't take that crap in my music.
