Man, some of the arguments I had on forums back in the day are probably unfathomable to some of you. Not just on this forum, either. Back in the late 90s or so, I guess, some flamewars would last months, and each reply would involve line by line breakdowns of the post we were replying to, comparisons between that post and a hundred previous posts, and so on. It was nuts.

Sometimes, it would literally take hours to reply to ONE post. We wasted SO MUCH time.

the internet is to blame for all of this, the rapid stupification of the masses through bastardisation of the English language over the web is unbelievable

The masses were stupid in the first place. Australia has had a functional illiteracy rate of at least 33% for decades now (and in some sources as high as 50%). Britain's is about 20%.

Many of my friends couldn't read or write despite finishing Year 12 - they used to ask me to read their social security correspondences.

Now add in people that are barely functionally literate and it gets pretty bad.

The Web and reality TV has just allowed the masses to come to prominence.

Arsis rocks and proved that you can teach the old dog that is Melodic Death Metal new tricks and they continue to churn out quality albums to this day.

Oh really? Well, how very presumptuous of you! How dare you presume to know what kind of arguments we are, and are not, capable of fathoming? I'll have you know that I can personally fathom anything. There is nothing that can potentially be conceived of that I myself am not capable of understanding. I happen to know that the other forumites here also have extensive fathoming capabilities. When it comes to fathoming arguments, in particular, our skills are second to none. I take serious offence to your claims, Sir. Why, just last week, I fathomed an argument so intense that several people within a 10 metre range of me suddenly imploded from the sheer belligerence of the argument I had been fathoming.

I don't believe for a moment that you would take the time to break down a person's argument line by line. Who would have the patience to do such a pointless thing? No one. No one would ever do that, for goodness' sake. It's really a preposterous claim from the outset. There's no point throwing around out-right lies. Moreover, I'm quite sure that the suggestion that you would compare that post to a hundred previous posts is a gross exaggeration of the most abhorrent sort. Why a person would want to exaggerate so frivolously to their friends and peers is beyond me. The worst part is your claim that this was all somehow nuts. Nuts? What is that even supposed to mean? Indehiscent fruit has got to absolutely nothing to do with any of this, and I can outright guarantee I wouldn't be the only one who thinks so! Keep your inane ravings to yourself.

Now you're surely just being facetious. Hours? Give me a break. No person has ever taken hours to reply to one post. The mere idea is absurd. But not as absurd as your suggestion that you wasted time. How do you propose to have wasted it? Everyone knows that time cannot be wasted, as time is an abstract construct. In short, it doesn't really exist. If you would like to explain to me how something that exists only in theoritcal imaginings can be wasted, I would gladly listen! Unfortunately, you know as well as I do that no such explanation can be given. You are a fool, Sir, and I won't have any of this nonsense.
