It makes absolute total sense when a band is exaggerating a musical genre to be sarcastic, ironic, or so cheesy the awfulness of the material becomes comedy.

I am perplexed how a band like Steel Panther gains any traction and somehow maintains a modicum of popularity.

The last bit was a general statement about using the word hipster. Also, people can be sarcastic/ironic without being "hipsters" or appealing to those who would be labeled as "hipsters".
