Band blows, Portnoy rocks.

What does that make?

A lame band with better drums.

Band still sucks.

How is it possible that the album of the year isn't the album of the month? And why does of the album of the month have a higher score?

Because the reviews are written by a collection of different people rather than one hive mastermind.

Nope. All that happened was, I made reference to your time here as a reviewer and suggested that you would not put up with attempts from the MR team to control what you wrote in reviews, and would have left earlier than you did if so. That's a compliment, if anything. I mean, I don't see your time here as an insult in and of itself, but it's a shame you do.

I have been reading this site for several years now and it has always been one of the most unbias and reliable review sites on the web. For that reason I have always trusted the scores posted here and they usually would be very close to how I would rate these albums.

I was really suprised when I read the score for this particular album. But I wasn't going to bash an album I havent listened to and so I gave it a chance. I personally think it does not deserve a score above 70.

I understand that people have different taste in music and I completely respect that. I might score an album a high 90 while someone else would score it considerably less. What I do not understand is why would a respectable website rate an album higher just because of factors that are not related to its musical content (in this case the death of a band member or having a "soft spot" for them). The reviewer even states that specifically (which IMO makes matters even worse) and if it weren't for those circumstances he would have scored it less.

I understand that reviewing is a personal matter and not a collective effort from several reviewers, but scoring an album higher for any external reason is incorrect and completely bias. Tyler seems like an intelligent and good writer, but he and the rest of the review staff have to understand that these actions would just let this website lose its credibility as an unbias metal review site.

186 replies and counting. Why stop here?

Once this dies down, could someone from the MetalReviews.com staff review "Waking the Fallen," preferably Tyler?

I sense Album of the Y- err..... CLASSIC potential.

I think this thread might have eclipsed Ultra Beatdown's.

At least Tyler still has the passion for music to think and write about it instead of just shooting off his holier-than-thou suck piece about other people's hard work. You don't have to agree, but be civil and try to contribute if you're gonna take up space. No one who's criticized his review has made even a modicum of legit musical argument as to why he might be wrong. There aren't enough metal brothers in the world for us to cannibalize each other. Go ahead - be smart; show us what you've got, but chill on the ad hominem shit.

Fuck you. How's that?

This is a review site, and there should be a standard of integrity that rises far higher than this ridiculous review. You want to talk about some metal brotherhood like it means something, but you seem to not grasp the concept of how shitty it is that a reviewer--who should have some sort of journalistic integrity--is telling consumers and fans that this album is near perfect, when he in fact doesn't even believe it himself. Utter bullshit.

So go on, my "metal brother," and tell me how the hell that helps a scene? How does it help those people who may read this and fork over their hard-earned cash, expecting a brilliant album yet getting one that's just decent, or maybe worse? Because next time they'll just fuck the scene a little more by downloading it for free.

You haven't got a clue. Now I kindly refer you back to my first two words here.

I've finally got some time to respond to the one thing here that merits being addressed - the metal brotherhood. The concept is simple. You see it in action when guys come up to you out of nowhere at shows and strike up a conversation about the band on your shirt. I went to seventeen shows last year and that happened at at least half of them. Metal fans only need one thing in common to respect each other - a love of the music, although we often share many of the same values as well. I think it's especially prevalent with us because many of us don't fit in too many other places, or at least we feel like our interest in this music sets us apart in a significant way from most of society. I see the same thing in action when I'm out riding. 99.9% of motorcyclists wave at other oncoming riders because what we do is uncommon and we absolutely love it and we're stoked to share it - even for an instant - with a kindred soul. It's clear you're not there yet, but I really and truly hope you find it some day, although it seems like it probably won't be in metal for you.

Invoking the metal brotherhood over an Avenged Sevenfold review is like going all in with a pair of threes.

I listened to a song by these guys once and it was horrible, then someone told me the singer was named M. Night Shaymalan or some shit and I really just dont want this thread to end. What a fun read this has been.

So it's not a 90, but then you gave it 90? but it's really a high 70 or low 80's? So what score should you have really given it?

This is my only issue.

Giving an album a higher (or lower) score just because a guy from the band kicked the bucket isn't exactly good reviewing.

It's all about the music. If the album is a low 80/high 70 then score it accordingly.

By the way the same would apply if Kerry King or Dave Mustaine or Steve Harris or any other relevant Metal musician died too.

No.... the kind of review where the guy's mind was already made up and he just went in to get a few "yeah they suck lol" comments from forumites.

This was indeed a bad review.
Anyway, Metal Storm rarely has good reviews...
