They can be long, but will they be as epic and varied as the long tracks on St. Anger?

The "Eastern influence" thing seems interesting. Hate to say this, but that has my curiosity for the new album increasing. I still think it will be a combo of TBA and Load. It's ok if the songs are long as long as James Hetfield stops whining and the songs are good. Seeing that Slayer, Maiden and Megadeth's albums have made an impact and they are nothing, but pure metal, nothing experimental, probably, Metallica thinks metal is the "in thing" now and will release an album similar to The Black Album with a few dosages of Load. Anyway, anything that I find to be good metal will find it's place in my collection. But, honestly, I dont have much hopes from this band.

Since Load Metallica has released crappier and crappier albums while their last "St Anger" was the crappiest piece of crap. You would think that it would be impossible to make an album worse than that, but I think it's still possible. I don't expect anything else than a total piece of crap like s:t anger and would be completely suprised if this album would be more than mediocre.

I think the album will be extremely boring, not really bad in the sense of St. Anger (god damnit I want to turn this off bad) but just fucking boring as hell and people will only think it's good because it's not oh my god turn it off it's hurting me bad like the last album.

Hopefully they prove me wrong though.

I'm kinda curious bout the Eastern influence thing. It's quite surprising for a band like Metallica to be experimenting on that. And define Eastern? It could range from Arabic to Oriental. J-Pop Metallica anyone?

Well, I am presuming the eastern influence to be something like egyptian leads (the way I describe it). The type found on Maiden's track Powerslave and the lead solo in Sepultura's Territory. Those two tracks immediately come to mind and I am a huge fan of those kinda leads.

Yeah I'm with Husker, Metallica haven't released anything I've liked in 15 years so I can't see them magically starting again now.

Seriously, everything since AJFA has just been flat out boring for me except St. Anger which is just really bad.

I'm also of the same mind as you guys. I'm not expecting anything worthy of Metallica anymore and I don't think they can surprise me. I also think that unavoidably the new album will bear similarities to StAnger. But what worries me most is that eventhough deep inside me I believed that metallica realized their mistake and changed a bit towards the best, judging by that interview I felt that at least Lars is totally empty. Empty of musical ideas, of passion for music, of the secret will to headbang, generally of everything that makes our music so wonderful. There was nothing there in his words just as there will be no depth in their new album. And I'd like nothing more than being proven a liar and a fool but it's up to metallica to prove that.

Did you people actually read the damn interview? He says eastern influences aren't that much, he says and I quote "don't read too much into that". Why are you going on about it?

Anyway like Husker says whatever they release it will be received well after the crapfest St.Wanker. I'm pretty sure I'll hate it as much but I would love to be wrong there.

Call me crazy, but a new Metallica album is always an event for me. Regardless of how dismal St. Anger was (I didn't think it was "the absolute worst thing ever put to CD!" but it certainly wasn't anything better than average), Metallica will always hold their place in my heart, partially because of my own nostalgia. They were, after all, the only band I really listened to during my first year as a metal fan.

Being a shameless fan of both Load and ReLoad, I'd be perfectly fine with Metallica returning to that sound for their new album. Hopefully, the "long" songs Ulrich is referring to will be like Fixxxer, Bleeding Me, and The Outlaw Torn (or better yet, Master Of Puppets, To Live Is To Die, and One). And that live medley of demos for the album did actually show promise (kind of reminded me of Ritual-era Testament in places).

I'm not banking on the new album being great, but I'm willing to forgive Metallica for St. Anger and give it a fair chance.

Metallica does have a good history of Eastern influence in their songs (Wherever I May Roam, Creeping Death), but Metallica doesn't have a good history of playing Metal (Load, Reload, St....eh you get the idea). And we should all be taking everything they (especially this man) says with a grain of salt. Remember, St. Anger was supposed to have an Entombed influence to it.

They could live comfortably the rest of their lives off of a back catalogue that wil sell until the end of time. Why keep putting out albums that are eithier complete embarrasments(St. Anger) or albums that are far below their talent level(Load, ReLoad).

/\ b/c they're a band, putting out music is what they do. I'm not reading much from the interview above (he barely said anything!) but I'll listen, and probably like, being one of the two people on the forum who thought St Anger was underrated.

Their talent level at this point is pretty low. Ulrich has always been a mediocre drummer, James' voice has gone to shit, and when I saw them last year, Kirk couldn't keep up with his solos, and fucked up quite a bit. Add to that their absymal songwriting skills, and they're basically the definition of a washed up band.

Yeah. I REALLY believe they aren't PHISICALLY able to play quality metal anymore. It's not that they don't want to, they just CAN'T DO IT anymore.
