So, you've been warned: Download the first issue of their next album, but the reissue 6 months later. I am SO against Roadrunner.

I love the band but they've always been radio friendly, kind of. So I don't think roadrunner can fuck them up very much.

Yeah they've been getting more and more radio friendly with each album so you can't really blame it on Roadrunner, although hearing Steven Wilson rap should be interesting

No, Roadrunner releases some great music, their marketing practices just suck. I know it's all about money with labels, but Roadrunner essentially mocks the buying public with their bullshit tacticts.

But still, Porcupine Tree aren't so bad, but Deadwing almost sounded like alternative rock/post-grunge to me. It was a letdown after hearing so much praise for the band. It's all I have by them. How's their other stuff compare?

Basically the further back into their discography you go, the more Pink Floyd-ish it gets. I pretty much only listen to In Absentia.

Hmmm...weird. Am I right about the alternative/post-grunge style, or am I not remembering it correctly? I still hear people talking about how great Deadwing is. Maybe I should pull it out and give it some more spins? I wasn't very impressed initially, but I did like it.

I thought of it as more of artsy rock like a british Dredg or something. You should probably try listening to it again since it seems like something you'd like. I don't remember that much about Deadwing besides the two meh rock songs, Arriving Somewhere But Not Here being awesome, and the second half of the album being all floaty and depressing.

I just realized I didn't put it on my mp3 player when I reformated it >_>

Deadwing to me sounds like something everyone would like. It deserves another shot, at a more mellow moment.

I love it really.

Yeah, I'll give it another shot. I also got an exclusive single with it that has like two unreleased songs. I think the single was for a song called "Lazarus." I could be wrong, though, I'm at work so I can't check.

Lazarus is my favorite song off Deadwing, but I simply love the whole album. I actually prefer Deadwing over In Absentia because Deadwing is simply better overall as an album.

Stupid Dream is a perfect exemple of pink floydish Porcupine Tree at it's best. I really need to get Lightbulb Sun though.

They went to the same label as their friends, Opeth, I bet that was the reason, Mikael must have adviced Steven Wilson to do so.
I really couldn't care less, Roadrunner did not ruin Opeth music, and among all the shitty bands, they are still home for 3 Inches Of Blood, DragonForce, Obituary....

It really would be great if they re-release all the albums. The earlier ones are hard to get and I don't feel like shelling out 20 bucks for an album.

I really want to get into this band but have heard too many onflicting reports on them so from the point of view of someone who loves Devin Townsend, Sonata Arctica, Dream Theatre, The Gathering and Edguy, what is their best album?
Which should I buy?

In Absentia.

Get it.

It's the only one I have by them so far, but it's incredible.

Porcupine Tree are simply amazing. I bought In Absentia on DVDA first, and then headed backward into the catalog.
Voyage 34 is the most trippy song/album Ive ever heard and Deadwing I thought was outstanding. Stupid Dream is more artsy than trip-hopish, but each album is a forward movement (in terms of style) from the last.
Ive been collectivley trying to get all of the back catalog however as mentioned some of them are out of print, most of note Lightbulb Sun. Ive asked their label if itll be reissued as most of the back catalog has, and they said it will but they dont know when. That is of course is Snapper remains in control of the older stuff. I hope so, they do a brilliant job with it.
If i were looking to hear more of their work then get Stars Die its like a 'best of' of their earlier work, its the first one I got after In Absentia, really opens your mind up to them.
Dont know if Id consider Deadwing alternative / post grunge, it has those moments I suppose, if anything I thought of it as more Prog mixed with everything else they have done. They are a fairly 'dark' band so I can see where the Alt comparison comes in.
