I've built up my collection of these guys over the past couple years. Can't wait for this.

I wonder if it can top "This godless endeavor", I'm not much into the band but I love that album.

Yeah, TGE was brilliant, a lot of their other stuff is so hit and miss. Let's see them approach a record in the more quality direction as of late.

Looks like normal bad metal cover art. Just kinda there but doesn't really bug me.

Hmm a Doors cover looking forward to hearing that one.

If they can top TGE than this will probably be 2010 album of the year.

Considering nearly every "metal" graphic artist out there is ripping off the template Travis created, give the guy some slack. Especially when he's working under the direction of the band.

I don't care for the kids in the cover, myself, but it's still high quality work.

Can't wait for the album. :dio:

I think 90% of Smith's art is this: a single person or figure with a distorted face or distorted colors. I guess this twist is two people. It is tiresome. I hate seeing people's faces on my cover art; landscapes are much better.

But yes, the album is oh-so-anticipated!! :dio:

Well, you clearly haven't seen much of Travis's work.

Well, I don't mean to sound like an ass but I have to agree. Sure, some of his work is very much like you said but some of his work is also pretty awesome and it is landscapes and such, like you said.

Stuff like his work with Draconian (the gothic doom band) or Deadsoul Tribe (awesome work on albums like Murder of Crows or January Tree), for example... or his work on the last Redemption album is cool too.

Of course, there's also always his sempiternal work with Opeth...

An artist has their "trademark" style but that doesn't mean they don't go outside of that once in a while...

Sure I have seen plenty of his art. I am not saying he doesn't go outside the box on occasion, and sometimes his (landscape) work is great (Opeth-Blackwater Park) but this particular Nevermore cover is like a parody of his worst attributes.

Maybe the 90% number was a gross exaggeration, and he has diversified a bunch in the last few years; I wouldn't know I don't buy as many of his artwork cds as I used to.

Anyroad, arguing over it isn't worth my time.

I am not an expert but I think that Travis Smith kinda invented the generic modern metal album artwork style, and while a lot of his stuff is very cool it is also often sort of autopilot metal cover.

That is a good summary Noodles.

I know how respected he is and how he got there, but this cover was pure 'autopilot'.
