Aah, now this is much better! But again, the mix sounds bad. Bruce's seem to be in the wrong key at times. And with the three songs heard so far it would appear that the band has slowed down a bit. Even the "fast" mid-section isn't that fast, it's deceptive. Still, a much better song.

This song is just like a great deal of stuff on the previous two albums, and the slowing down has been present since The X Factor.

Douché!

Wonder why these mixes sound bad?

Quote:
Producer Kevin Shirley (IRON MAIDEN, DREAM THEATER) has posted the following message on his official web site:

"Got my copy of the new IRON MAIDEN album ['A Matter of Life and Death'] — well, a reference disc — and took off early this morning in my car to check it out, top down on an uncrowded ocean highway, and I must say, I'm pretty happy we (well, Steve [Harris], really) decided against using the mastering! I dig it! For all the little extra hi-fi nuances they add in mastering, the raw attack and bite of the original mixes is quite refreshing to hear! It is EXACTLY as I mixed them in the studio, EXACTLY what the guys in the band heard! In the mastering process, the mastering engineer sometimes takes it upon himself to be creative, say to add certain frequencies which boost vocals or the bass, which makes the balance between the kick and bass guitar change, and on many occasions I've got a mastered CD back, and then have been unhappy — but usually blame myself! Even when we mastered this album (which we didn't use), it had a little analog compression added, which brings the guitars up a tiny bit, and knocks the transients off the snare drum, thus diluting the attack and impact of the snare. Now what you'll hear on the MAIDEN album is the way it sounded in the studio, and while it may not be as loud as some other CDs, who gives a fuck! Turn the volume up then... My three fave tracks are 'Longest Day', 'For the Greater Good Of God' and 'Lord Of Light' — although that may well change tomorrow!"

"A Matter of Life and Death" is scheduled for release in North America on September 5 via Sanctuary.

Metallica and Bob Rock said St. Coffee Can sounded great, too, remember?

I wasnt a huge fan of that Breeg song, it was decent though. This one however I have to disagree with the majority, I like it, its nothing great, but it is good. The one Noodles posted was about on the same level as the Breeg song for me.

So from what I have heard so far:

The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg - 6.5/10
Different Worlds - 7.5/10
Brighter Than A Thousand Suns - 6.5/10

From these songs I can easily say Im not much looking forward to this. I just hope that these are some of the weaker tracks (most Maiden albums have them).

I've never been a big Maiden fan anyway, so I'm not overly concerned. I do find it odd that you like Different Worlds better, though. Weirdo.

I think there's WAY too much being made of a pre-release MP3. These always sound worse than the album to me anyway, and I rarely hear one from any band that sounds great. Judging production at this point is a waste of time. Wait until you hear the album.

But who doesn't master a CD?

Yeah, but there are many metal fans who want that "raw" sound too, which may be what they're going for. Like I said, I'll wait and see what it actually sounds like on the album. If it sounds more "live", then I don't see much of a problem - although in that case, they should also skip the annual live album this time

...as long as "raw" and "live" DON'T = St. Anger :P

:dio:

Right, raw is fine, but part of mastering brings the volume level up to current standards. Without properly mastering it you're taking a gamble.

Take Iced Earth's "Burning Times" from Something Wicked This Way Comes and "The Reckoning (Don't Tread On Me)" from The Glorious Burden. Play them back-to-back, but play "Burning Times" first and crank it LOUD! Then play "The Reckoning" next. Notice the difference? The mastering on The Glorious Burden sucks. The volume level is LOWER than a CD that came out 6 years before it!!

Mastering a CD is a very important thing. Raw is one thing, outdated is another. If I have to put my CD player on 27 to get the new Maiden album to sound normal that is annoying.

I agree about the volume to an extent, but I still want to see how notable a difference it ends up being in this case. If the producer thinks the mix sounds better at this volume, I at least want to give the benefit of the doubt until I hear it. If I only have to turn the volume up a notch or two, I can live with that.

My only question is why the recording turned out in such a way that the mastering would do what he says it did.

SAMPLES OF ALL 10 SONGS

I swear, the biggest complaint about this album will be its production quality, or maybe that every song seems to have mellow, slow parts.

None of the tracks really jumps out at me, so my expectations have dropped a bit. There have been other albums that had similar initial effects on me that turned out to by great, but there are just as many that didn't, and something seems bland about these songs to me so far.

Although I still won't judge most production aspects on a sample, the backing vocal mix just sounds sloppy on some of these.

And funny enough, I had to turn up the volume on my speakers to listen to the samples

Dammit, I want so bad to have a some good new Maiden to listen to next month
