Helstar today is basically James Rivera's post-Helstar band Distant Thunder. It's Helstar under a different name. But now it's back to Helstar because people don't care about Distant Thunder, they just want Helstar...even though the name doesn't change the band. So, in order for Rivera to make a living and get promoters to book his band he has to use the name Helstar. Kind of lame, but that's how it is.

Jerry's solo work is really Alice In Chains under a different name. Sure, Facelift and Dirt were heavy and dark, but on AICs self-titled album they were different, more like Jerry's solo stuff. In the end, my opinion is simply this: It's just a name. Nothing will change.

Yeah, but Ken, you can't deny that the voice is a big thing. Layne had an extremely distinctive voice that's been mimicked over the years but never equaled.

Besides, Layne penned some great tracks for AIC. Head Creeps... Hate to Feel... Angry Chair...

That having been said, this will probably be a huge disappointment, but my faithometer is up for this one as opposed to the new Mayhem or the new Terrorizer.

Correct. Layne's voice was definitely unique, that's why I said earlier if they could get someone that sounded like Layne somewhat it could work. I still think Cantrell has a great voice and he can pull off a lot of AICs material and sound good at it.

And yeah, Layne was definitely growing as a songwriter, too bad he's dead. I'm a big fan of Cantrell's solo stuff, so I personally think he should just continue on with that and bury Alice In Chains, but maybe he needs to do what James Rivera has to do? It sucks, but the music world dictates shit like that, sadly.

Oh ye of little faith. I don't see how they can't pull it off (the latter).

ALICE IN CHAINS frontman Layne Staley died on April 5, 2002

thus, this reformation will suck or, at least, smell like $$$ :?

Please, Jerry Cantrell was Alice In Chains! If they could pull a singer that sounds like Layne it'll be great, Jerry sang a lot of songs that people think Layne sang.

OK, I am an unabashed AIC fan, but you sir, are sorely mistaken. You don't just replace Layne Staley. Granted, Jerry Cantrell is the songwriting force of the group, but even he cannot hope to recapture the same sound without Layne. Out of curiousity, I will watch this new guy sing on the VH1 special. That said, Alice in Chains, as a band, is dead, and they should stay that way. I am so sick of these bands resurrecting themselves with the same name (GNR without Slash?!) after one of their key members quits or dies.

and that's exactly why I have so much respect for Page & Plant ! Image

Aren't Genesis back together now?

Now if Genesis does get back together that would be awesome. The old shit is the best!

Not that this guy is bad, but he doesn't fit and I can sing better than him and would be a better fit. Anyone got Jerry's number?
