I'd be curious to hear what you can do with either a microphone, a guitar, a bass guitar, a drumkit or a keyboard.

One of the absolute worst arguments you can use in any discussion, be it about music/sports/whatever, is "If it's so bad then why don't you do better?" It's terrible in any context.

You are right about Manowar falling off the mountain after LTH, though

And one and I don't usually use, mind you. But Octavarius criticism is so systematic that I wasn't able to hold it any longer...

actually, I base my entire opinion on this one thing question I pose to myself as I listen to songs:

"could I write a better song that this?" if I can't surpass the quality of the music It is good. If I know I am writing better material than the music I am hearing, I think it sucks. I won't learn anything from the music, I won't get into it.

This has nothing to do with technical skill, it is more about songwriting and the production of the song (not the quality of the audio, the production, if you know what I am saying)

for example, the most technical speed metal can be horribly written. I know I can't play better than those guys, but I could certainly write better material because I have. but some songs are so simple, but brilliant, like 80's pop songs that were largely written by unskilled musicians that could express thier ideas to a producer and then in turn the producer tells them how to execute thier thoughts musically.

I mean, It really has everything to do with the melodies, hooks, groove and vibe of the material than the skill level of the performer.

I would also like to add to this that when I listen to music, I determine whether or not I like it by asking myself if this is the kind of music I would like to make, if not, I could care less.

What band are you playing in?

I'd go to that festival if I could. And Manowar doesn't suck, although their latest album does.

Well, Ive got about 20 songs written. Demoing will start when I get the right equipment to do one. I am a sound engineer and am picky about sound in general. I have done the bass parts on about 5 songs so far. all in about 2 hours. I know an incredible guitar player, an amazing bass player and I have my own ideas about drums (recording them myself a la tom scholz with heavy overdubs, playing only a few pieces of the kit at a time to avoid bleeding into the mics. I am a singer with a 5 octave range, but don't sing on key too well without some practice with the material. But I can ace my own material. I use too many different voicing and tones, but I tend to emulate other singers, so learning to sing on key is like learning how to sing from the beginning when I want to do a different voice.

I don't know. I just get a riff going in my head and the drums and other instruments fill in around it. getting it on "tape" shouldn't be that hard. I know enough gifted musicians to help me out when the time comes. I'll post some lyrics when I get a chance.

This festival sounds amazing! Manowar playing all amazing albums, I might look into this. BTW, Warriors of the World sucks? Shut up. If Call to Arms, Swords in the Wind, Warriors of the World United, Hand of Doom, House of Death and Fight til we Die don't sound cool to you you must be stupid. I know every other track was rubbish but so what.

This is the kind of attitude that makes Metal fans the butt of every fucking joke ever told about rock music, this kind of hard-headed need to proclaim that everyone else opinion but your own is somehow wrong and everyone's a moron that doesn't agree with you. I don't know if your aware of this, but there are 8 billion people in the world and probably less than 100,000 people that buy manowar records, I guess you're in very elite company if everyone must be stupid because they did not like them. It is too bad, this kind of attitude is why no one wants to take metal seriously. People can't even have a sense of humor or a basic understanding that people are different and have different tastes. Popularity does not make a band good, but neither does an elitist fanbase that goes out of thier way to insult everyone that is not a die hard fan. I am not a moron, I gave them a fair shake more than I should have and it wasn't my thing, somehow people equate this with intelligence and I think it is beyond immature and just ridiculous. I know this will fall on deaf ears and probably result in more childish flaming, but hey, it makes me feel better and that's what matters. Possibly someone, someday might read it and learn something, but I doubt it because I am starting to realise that fans of underground/indie metal can be just as stupid and unobjective as folks that listen to mainstream metal. I was wrong for assuming that people that listen to the greatest music in the world could get along and have some understanding, but apparently not.

Shit, don't cry on my loincloth. Manowar are great...You on the other hand are not. BTW, the last line suggests that you have no friends.

All my friends don't listen to power metal. One or two actually do, but since we are all busy, we don't get together much to play music or just talk anymore. Most of my friends are in thier 40's and listen to older music, but also appreiciate a lot of my influences. They are content on not being very up on things and I'm content not caring what it was like seeing status quo in the 70's, hence I come here to talk about power and prog. metal, et al.

Yeah... Pretty disappointing. Atleast they haven't proclaimed them as headliners yet, so who knows what's gonna happen (Van Halen?!). Still, they are really hitting the re-runs this year. I might try Wacken this time.

I'm thinking that too, but Sweden Rock is a tradition for me and my friends. I love the way the festival is run, I love the fans in Sweden.

Wacken, Im told, is getting horribly corporate. Charging people to use the toilets etc.
