Yeah, Nightwish is, in fact, metal with opera singing, but if I had to label them it would simply be symphonic metal.

I would say it's more traditional 80's metal than thrash, but there was a fine line between some 80's metal bands and thrash (Forbidden, Heathen, etc.), so I don't think that label is too far fetched.
