Some of their older stuff is ok, but the reason you can't get into Gorgoroth is because they're shitty norsecore like Dark Funeral.

True. The vocalist is good though. Very versatile and powerful.

Gorgoroth aren't that special, but they're nowhere near the crappiness of Dark Funeral.

they have their moments. If you took like a song or two of of all the albums, you then would have a solid disc. For this reason i will probably buy the live album as i don't own any of their stuff, only heard it second hand.

It's a description tr00-kiddies gave other blackmetal bands that have a somewhat good production. If it's fast, clear, and satanical, it's apparantly norsecore.

The term was invented by the finnish band Wizzard. In an old interview in Suomi Finland Perkele magazine, they divided black metal into three categories:

Heavy/black metal - Black metal based on traditional metal. Venom, Barathrum, Countess etc.

Death/black metal - Black metal based on death metal (obviously). Satanic DM like Possessed and Deicide.

Norsecore - BM having (in a way) more in common musically with punk than traditional metal, often based on tremolo picked riffs and blastbeats. Most BM that came out of Norway and Sweden back in the day can be lumped into this category. That includes Ildjarn, kvlt-kiddies! :P

It's funny to see how norsecore as a term is misused by newer BM-heads. It didn't originally have any kind of negative connotation, it was just a term to describe a certain style within BM.

If it's not satanic, it's not black metal! Simple.

if anything, Burzum's pagan. but.. to the true metalheads, Burzum slipped out of "metal" towards ambience a long time ago.

(needless qualifier: Burzum is one of my favourite BM "bands")

I'm not too familiar with Taake, so i can't really say. The term norsecore simply refers to the style of black metal that was created in Norway in the early 90's, becoming the prevalent style of BM for a while. Examples range from Immortal and Satyricon to Ildjarn, who, while very different from each other, all have certain stylistic similarities.

Listen to a bunch of 90's Norwegian BM and you'll get it.

Black metal existed before Burzum.

Black metal = satanic metal, essentially. Of course it's not always that simple. There are many different forms of satanism, and satanism can be presented in music in different ways besides just repeating the word Satan in your lyrics ad nauseum (a'la Dark Funeral).

Burzum's early works were satanic, and Varg was a satanist back then. The later stuff (Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, Filosofem) deviated from black metal, and could better be called pagan metal (i don't think Varg would disagree). The prison albums aren't even metal.

Yeah, thats what i thought. I read it and i was like wtf?!?!?!?

So, norsecore was a term to describe nordic black metal, but now its a way to ridicule bands that follow the original nordic bands but arent from norway or are substandard?????

Yeah, that's basically it. Norsecore = Generic black metal. Doesn't always have to be a bad thing but it generally is.
