I agree with both of you, but a guitarist isn't better if he can play faster. It's the creativity that counts. I prefer a scale played slow than two notes played really fast. And Tony is also handicapped, remember? He's missing half of two fingers... although I don't know if it makes a difference, him being the player he is..

I didn't say that was the case.

Apparently he started playing the style he is now synonymous with because of his injury. So no industrial accicent = very different Sabbath (and Heavy Metal).

I don't think that's true... their style evolved out of heavy blues and a fascination with the occult... the name "Black Sabbath" was a Boris Karloff film. Cool, huh?
And if it IS the case that his style evolved out his injury than that's what i'd call a happy accident.

but umm... in what ways is Adrian Smith better than Tony Iommi? I still don't understand...

Some people prefer Adrian and some prefer Tony, that's all. I like them both and won't disrespect eithier by saying one is better than the other. Mainly because it's totally different styles.

They are both pioneers in their own ways, but as far as solos go, the nod goes to Smith.

The accident IS the reason for the guitar sound on Black Sabbath, I believe Iommi has mentioned this himself in the past. I remember reading an article about Iommi in some guitar magazine (cant remember which one) and it mentions that he uses thimble like extensions on those fingers, and as a result, needs to be tuned down the way he is. As for Iommi's style, that I can see that coming from blues and the occult.

I cant say which one I would take when it comes to Smith vs Iommi. But I like the combination of Smith and Murray better than Iommi. Smith isnt much into improvising, but he is a very technical guitarist, not just a fast guitarist. Murray on the other hand loves to improvise with his stuff, but their at their strongest together. Janick Gers, IMO, just takes up space (oh and flings the guitar in the air a few times, yea real musical talent).

Janick's solos are pretty sloppy, but as a songwriter he has progressed immensely as a songwriter over the years.

Actually I really love the solo in that song. :)

Man...I'm so tired of the Gers bashing. Taking up space? Come on! That guy is the greatest showman ever! Never seen a guitarist having so much energy on stage. And his songwriting is pretty strong too. He wrote the heaviest songs in Maiden. Yeah, if you're only talking about the solos, H and Murray are better, no doubt. But, IMO, there's so much more to a guitarist than solos!

I dunno... no doubt smith and murray are both amazing players, but I also don't think that Iommi ever plays as fast as he actually can... as for the accident causing his style, now that you mention it, I DO remember hearing that on some sabbath documentary... anyway, i guess i'll just always like sabbath more than maiden... but that's still no reason to throw eggs at them!

thank god for FrigidSymphony! this was thread to comment on how sharon's a cunt but it ends up bein a sabbath-maiden warfare!! civil war between the father and the son..lol.

i think both sabbath and maiden are gods in their own ways. maiden looks up to sabbath and sabbath themselves recognizes maiden as an awesome band. as for the better guitarist arguement, both are great. but i'l pick smithy....not because i'm a massive maidonian, but the fact that his solo's are more melodious. iommi is fantastic no doubt.

oh by the way.....sharon ozbourne is a FUCKIN cunt!
