i like most Bathory before the Viking era, but i don't like them enough to get the box-set.

i also remember a no-name band tribute to him, from south america i think... whatever happened to that? got cancelled, i hope..

Only have listened to Norland I and II and he does it himself, and then you wonder with bands like slipknot and they are like 34 guys and they make that crap and get a bigger paycheck, and you wonder.

I own a Quorthon album, the one with "Major Snooze" on it. I really like that album. :D

I might ask for this on my birthday (17th June) I've only heard 4 or 5 Bathory songs, pretty sure it's a safe purchase though. It says both black and death metal in the article-is that accurate?

Ha! :? I actually forget what it sounds like, all I know is they were on the sampler CD from 1994 with Furbowl. They had the song "Major Snooze" on there and I loved it. I can hardly remember what the CD sounds like. I'd assume I wouldn't like Bathory much.

Depends, the early stuff is basically "Evil" Speed Metal. The common description thrown around is Venom with talent. There are definite similarities between the two, but Bathory had more depth musically. He then evolved into prototypical Black Metal, and even adapted a more Viking Metal feel at the end. It's all good stuff, really. The very best at just about everything he did.

All I can say is try it out. You like some Extreme Metal, so it's not out of the question that you'd like it. The guy could pump out some awesome riffs.

The two Quorthon albums are just damn weird. It's like mid 90's Alternative Music. Very strange.

Hmmm...I thought Bathory was brutal death metal. :? I'll have to check this out then.

early Venom is black metal, or proto-black metal, or whatever you want to call it, then it got tighter and thrashier and cooler (check out Blood Fire Death, it's fucking sweet). Requiem is thrash but the songs are kinda samey, it's good if you're just looking to bang yor head though.

as for the Viking era, frankly i can't listen to it, but i think they're considered one of the top VM bands.
