So, my friend recently asked me to burn a metal CD for him. He knows absolutely NOTHING about metal so I figured I would burn him a CD of "the classics". So then I got to thinking, what are songs that every metalhead should know? I could only come up with like six, and here they are:

Master of Puppets
The Trooper
Holy Wars...The Punishment Due
Angel of Death
The Number of the Beast
Painkiller

It's surprisingly difficult, at least for me. It's one thing to name your favorite songs, but it's quite a bit harder to name classic songs everyone should know of, regardless of what you think of them. What songs do you guys think everybody should know?

Good list you got there. I'd add mine and from some different genres

BS - Iron Man
Candlemass - Solitude
Cryptopsy - Phobophile
Napalm Death - Scum
Testament - Over the Wall
Burzum - Jesus Tod
Darkthrone - Kathaarian Life Code

You got some real classics picked out already, looks good. I'd only pick one from each band so you really can cover some ground, though it's really, really hard to think of songs EVERYBODY that listen to metal should know.

I'll add some suggestions:

Ozzy - Bark at the Moon
Black Sabbath - Iron Man/Paraoid/Black Sabbath
Dio - Holy Diver/Stand up and Shout
Guns n Roses - Sweet Child/Welcome to the Jungle/Paradise City (I'm sure he's heard these though)

I could go on but I'm not sure the following are tracks that everybody knows, but I think most have atleast heard of them. I'd recommend them anyway.

W.A.S.P. - Animal/I Wanna Be Somebody
Skid Row - Monkey Business/Youth Gone Wild/Slave To The Grind
Manowar - Hail and Kill
Helloween - Eagle Fly Free
Blind Guardian - Valhalla
Queensrÿche - Eyes of a Stranger/Empire

Okay, I'm basically starting to name personal favorites so I'm not sure my list is valid anymore :D
But I'd definitely add some Ozzy/Sabbath and Dio songs.

No, no, no. You want to scare the guy off completely? I'd say go for Sabbath, Maiden, less-heavy than Painkiller Priest... Plus catchy Power Metal stuff like Helloween - Mr Torture. If you have to get him harsh-vocalling, try Killswitch Engage or something.

Depends on the guy. I started my roommate with In the Kingdom Where Everything Dies... by Cryptopsy, now he's into it like insane. And he was listening to soft rock and shit. You better let them listen to it all and give them more of what they like.

Ah, sure. Your average Britney fan is going to convert to metal through Cryptopsy. Too much faith there, Husker, perhaps a little less church, hmmm?

It's a silly argument, really, since everyone's different. Maiden's probably the best overall intro.

Not all classics but a good way to get him into metal

Megadeth - Hangar 18
Megadeth - Symphony Of Destruction
Katatonia - Tonight's Music
Lacuna Coil - Heaven's a Lie
Nevermore - The Heart Collector
Paradise Lost - Sun Fading
Sonata Arctica - Fullmoon
Stratovarius - Black diamond
Amaran - Inflict
Nightwish - Elvenpath
Katatonia - Sweet Nurse

This wasn't really intended as a discussion about how to get him into metal, but it's all good . One thing is, I guess I shouldn't have said he doesn't know anything at all about metal--he's heard some just from being around me and my other friend, he just wouldn't know why Iron Maiden is better than Avenged Sevenfold. He does seem to find entertainment in harsh vocal-ed stuff just to headbang to, although I don't think he really understands the music at all...kind of a predicament.

You can also give him a copy of Operation Mindcrime.

At The Gates - Slaughter Of The Soul
In Flames - Behind Space
Dark Tranquillity - Punish My Heaven
Quiet Riot - Cum On Feel The Noize
Venom - In League With Satan
Riot - Swords & Tequila
Angra - Metal Icarus
Into Eternity - Severe Emotional Distress

From the top of my head, some of the most relevant songs that haven't already been listed.

Every metal head should own that album, but all my friends who are into metal don't. It seems like its a classic that gets overlooked by many metal fans.

Bullet Ride is a good song for that. Hell, even my mom said it was alright.

Stuff from Reroute to Remain might work better than Whoracle or Colony, though. It sounds more streamlined.
