I can't believe this question's never really been asked before, but how did you all take an interest in metal to begin with?

For me, it's kind of a funny story. Eight and a half years ago, I was a High School student experimenting with the whole "romantic/emotional teenager" personality. At the time, I tried to "detest metal" because it was "just a bunch of screaming." However, after listening to more of it sporadically, I eventually had to finally admit that I liked the genre (which, in turn, got me to let go of that whole "romantic teen role" I was trying to play at the time). So I bought my first Metallica album a little later (Load), and the rest they say is history.

Well, I saw Slayer's video for Bloodline on MTV once, and I liked it, so I got that album, then worked my way through their back catalogue. Then other stuff, like Vader. And so on.

I was like 11. One of my friends older brother who I knew and my cousin were into metal and I went and blindly and stupidly bought metallica - Load, I think it had just come out. Then borrowed MoP, and Megadeth RIP and then it just went crazy. Next year I was into Emperor and Dimmu Borgir, Anthems and EDT. I loved it and I'd like to live those days again, it's just not as enjoyable as it was back then.

My older brother was into metal when I was quite young, he sort of planted the seed. My best friend got into it when we were like 14 and tried to get me interested but I was all about Techno back then. He always played some when I was visiting him though and I gradually started liking it, especially Metallica. Metallica was all over MTV and stuff back then too, eventually I embraced them and their music and listened to their stuff for like a year constantly.

After a year of consuming all of Metallicas catalogue my mind was definitely open about metal in general, so I started exploring with the help of my friend. The Blind Guardian, Demons & Wizards and Iced Earth trio was like a revelation to me, together with bands like Pain, Edguy, Evergrey, White Skull and more. Can't really remember exactly what my favorite bands were back then, since I enjoy so many of them still and have forgotten about others.

Basically I owe it all to Metallica, and for that I'll always love 'em, even if the next album is even shittier than St Anger.

Agreed. My older brother listened to Metallica, Pantera, White Zombie and others when I was growing up. I listened to them growing but didn't go much farther than that until a guy I worked with ten years later started burning me CDs like Emperor, Megadeth and Cannibal Corpse.

That's actually how it was for me too with Metallica. For about a year, they were basically all I listened to (sans a few classic rock bands like Queen and Billy Joel). I was actually a little weary about buying an album from another band because I knew it would definitely be a change, and I was afraid of losing interest in Metallica too fast. But then, about 11 months after I bought Load, I bought Countdown To Extinction by Megadeth. And from that point on, I was a full-fledged metalhead.

Alt rock like Rage Against The Machine, SOAD etc making me realise that there was an alternative to pop. Then blind-bought Powerslave, and discovered Maiden. Etc, etc.

rage, soad, slipknot, mudvayne, metallica -> in flames, dimmu borgir, more popular "underground" metal -> metal metal metal....

I was eight and my father took me to the record store, as i was waiting for him i decided to take a look at the tapes and was very impressed by the cover of Holy Diver so i asked the lady at the counter what kind of music was that, and she told me "oh its like Bon Jovi you know? heavy metal", ive heard Bon Jovi on the radio before so i asked my father to buy it for me, and that was basically my first introduction to metal, i didnt became a fan right away until two years later when i met this guy from my school who had similar tastes as me and we started to exchange tapes.

first rock and nu-metal like the offspring, limp bizkit and korn (no, really), then Metallica and after Children of Bodom i wasn't "scared" of harsh vocals anymore.

when i really think about it, i think it began with linkin park...then it went on to metallica, because a friend of mine lent me MoP...i listened to metallica a while, before maiden took over... Iron Maiden are my heroes, and will always be, led me into more spectres of metal, and one of my greatest influences in playing and writing music

Yeesh, this topic again?

My Father had an extensive Vinyl collection featuring all of the heavyweights of 70's Classic Rock, and I would frequently borrow them and was actively listening to music at an early age. My older brothers had a thing for the "Dirty" Rock of the 80's and I really enjoyed that stuff as well, still do. I remeber stealing their copy of Def Leppard's "Pyromania" album and literally playing the thing until it broke. From there on it was just a natural progression into Metal, I suppose. I've always had a thing for loud and obnoxious Guitars.

I always had a weird interest in Metal, but one morning I heard "I, Voyager" by Nevermore, and that sealed the deal.

That makes me feel very old. To me BNW is a pretty recent release.

Anyway, my brother used to listen to AC/DC and Metallica a lot when we had to share a bedroom, but it never really interested me. It wasn't until I first heard Manowar's Kings of Metal when I was 15 that I was hooked.

I saw the video for SOAD's 'Chop Suey!'. Then I got into Slipknot, then Disturbed. Then I went and bought In Flames' 'Come Clarity', which cemented it. Yeah, I'm pretty new to the genre (about 1 and a half years).
