I'm talking albums that really are worthy of all the praise heaped on it. I got nothin' except for possibly Rust In Peace. I think because I had a bad experience with The Black Album, that I new view "classic" albums as receptacles of much filler

i still think nr of the beast deserves its classic status...it was the breaktrough of the band.

Everything from 10 years ago and back by Iron Maiden.
Judas Priest - Painkiller, Sad Wings of Destiny
Bathory - Under the Sign of the black mark
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
Napalm Death - Scum
Sabbath - Paranoid, Master of Reality, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Black Sabbath and so on


From the top of my head. There's no arguing any of these albums really. I can't imagine why one would.

I was considering those, but I think all of them except Sabbath Bloody Sabbath have a skip-worthy moment. The Warning anyone?

I'd argue with these. Their influence is beyond doubt, and they have some excellent songs on them, but really, there's a lot of filler and crap spread out on those four albums. Dio/Martin era Sabbath over Ozzy's anyday.

I added them for influence. They do have their weak moments but really nothing ever has been more influential to a whole genre of music. The Dio and Martin era, great as they are, are not influential like these.

Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son

I can't think of any classic albums that are truly flawless. From the Judas Priest albums I've heard I'd say they definitely come close because nothing really stands out as weak or boring on them. Possessed - Seven Churches is damn good but I think that there have been better thrash/death metal albums than it.

My favorite Judas Priest CD is "Defenders of the Faith".

I feel like naming some early 90's non metal classic albums so here's a small list:

Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dreams
Live - Throwing Copper
Pixies - Surfer Rosa
Weezer - The blue album
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Green Day - Dookie (whether you like or not, it's a classic)
Offspring - Smash
Nirvana - Nevermind

I haven't heard that one yet, I'm slowly moving up from Sad Wings of Destiny in their discography and only at Killing Machine so far.

My favorite priest is Stained Class. White Heat, Red Hot. Exciter. Better by you, Better Than Me. Beyond the Realms of Death. All classic tracks. I really don't think any tracks on that album are filler.

As for other albums, I would say Ride the Lightning. Even the instrumental, Call of Ktulu, draws me in every time. Could Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk be a perfect classic? I'd think so.

Painkiller/Stained Class.

One spawned a new wave of speed metal, the other NWOBHM. Both completely quality from start to finish.

Oh yes, and Defenders is my third favourite. Just some amazing songs on there.

You're forgetting SWOD. The first heavy metal album, historically speaking. Also a collection of some of metal greatest songs to this day.

I'd also agree with Mintrude that RIP comes pretty close to being perfect, except the horribly camp "INFILTRATE THEM" bits on Take No Prisoners.

But then better-known albums such as these can often have their greatness exagerrated- because they are often the first things people hear when getting into metal or whatever so they have an added sentimental attraction. To find the albums that deserve every bit of the reverence they get you'd probably have to look at more specific genre classics slightly deeper within metal.

I find Entombed's Wolverine Blues to be an absolute classic. Might just be me.

Gamma Ray - Land of the Free

Dio - Holy Diver, a fantastic album, all songs are classics and feels really fresh compared to anything released to that date.

Which Judas Priest album(s?) that are true classics is a hard thing to decide. I mean they've released a bunch of awesome CDs but none of them are completely without atleast one track which kinda feels like filler-material. My favorite is Painkiller but in my opinion it's a bit too "young" to be a real classic, especially when considering how much great material they released before that. British Steel is the album that made their stardom, and it's a fantastic collection of mostly commercial songs, but it's a bit overrated. Sad Wings of Destiny could probably be considered a classic, but I don't think that album has stood the test of time as well as the later ones. I rarely encounter younger metal fans who dig that CD.
I think with a band like Judas Priest it's hard to pinpoint one album as a metal classic, I'd like to say they are a classic band instead.

No I agree with that.

No way. Left Hand Path is 100 times better than Wolverine Blues. I suspect it influenced a lot more bands than WB too.
