Wasn't sure which forum to put this in, so I chose this one.

So I'm in the mood for something driving, anthemic, and positive; something besides the obligatory Freedom Call/Power Metal stuff.

Help a brutha out? :dio:

 Hhmm not sure about what you're asking here but I think I felt that way when I was listening to Masterplan - Aeronautics (2005) album. Generally, I believe the lighter/happier side of metal is closer to hard/heavy rock. Gotthard - Lip Service springs to mind right now but there are hundreds of others out there.

DUDE!! You're talking about my kind of power metal.

DUDE!! You're talking about my kind of power metal.

Power Quest - anything by these guys
Stratovarius - I know you already know about these guys, but get Fourth Dimension if you don't have it. It has one of the most uplifting songs ever "Against the Wind."
Gamma Ray - (agin, I know you know about them) almost anything
Iron Savior - They have choruses that make you want to shit they're so awesome.
And then! Also check out Last Tribe and Timeless Miracle for some happy choruses and lyrics.

FLOWER METAL!!!!

Any pirate-era Running Wild should do the trick, my recomendation would either be "Under Jolly Roger" or "Pile Of Skulls" (when you get to Treasure Island you will be eye patched with a parrot on your shoulder screaming your lungs out).

Other than that, Manowar and Virgin Steele seems like obvious choices, and i agree with NESS about Iron Savior.

For a different type of uplifting I try Pelican, or Terria (Devin Townsend).

uh... Sonata Arctica, anyone? This was one of the reasons I got into them. I adore uplifting empowering metal.

Was anyone taking bets on how long it would take Frigid to bring up Sonata Arctica?

yes, but besides that, SA are very uplifting. I'm only surprised no one mentioned them before. Or was everyone waiting for me to do it?

Two words: Folk. Metal.

Finntroll, Elvenking, Ensiferum, Falchion, Manegarm and Falconer. If it's a quieter kind of happiness, Agalloch.

EDIT: Forgot Korpiklaani and Shaman (Korpiklaani before they became Korpiklaani).

They can be very uplifting, but I just didn't think of Sonata Arctica as being uplifting in the anthemic way the original poster described. It's probably just each person's view of what's anthemic :P

Well it's good then that "Folk Metal" is mostly about northern european folk culture like celtic, scandinavian and such were melodies and maybe lyrics (I'm not really sure about that) tend to be generally happier. If there existed such a thing as greek folk metal I can assure you it would be darker, gloomier and sadder than gothic metal.

Do you mean any kind of uplifting metal? Uplifting black metal?

I'd say God Is An Astronaut is very uplifting post rock.

Actually, Glittertind! Viking punk reworkings of old folks songs :) Very uplifting.
