http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2TSFtppNSE This is the fellow I went to see on my hot date. I figured you'd all apreciate the amazing guitar skill of this guy. This is a pretty bad recording, but it was the only one on youtube. When I saw him, he was backed by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Anyway, watch that, and wait till the solo about halfway through, he SINGS ALONG with his own improvised solos. Anyone who plays guitar should be able to appreciate how unbelievably well he must know his instrument and how much talent that requires. |

He's really good, but he totally ruins the solo by singing what he's playing... |

I thought that was the best part. Not only does it sound really cool, it's technically astonishing. |

Dudes bass solos are sick and wrong no matter who is playing them. Great guitar solo. A lot of jazz guitarists and piano players sing the lines they are playing. Some do it naturally but I knew guys that just did it because they thought it would make them look like tr00 jazzers. |

I'd say both are damn good. |

Billy Sheehan's pretty cool. He's really fast, that's for sure. I'm quite partial to Gary Willis as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysd0fC4hI3Y Roffelmayo, how did this turn into a bass player thread? |

Same here, got in via Zorn, Coltrane and the Shining mainly. What's your story? |

I was introduced to Jazz through bands like Spyro Gyra and the Rippingtons, and that's about as far as I got for a long while. I then heard about Buddy Rich and other Jazz drummers, and so I began to listen to some older Jazz stuff, if only for the drumming. Then I began to listen to more, like Coltrane and Davis and I soon heard what great music Jazz is. |
