Since there isn't a seperate section for this, there might as well be a unified thread.

Anyway, here are some good and not-so-well-known viking/folk/medieval metal bands.

*I didn't include band myspace links. But you all should be able to find them fairly easily, and almost all the bands here have a myspace.

Ancient Rites
- I'm surprised no one has mentioned them here. They are black/medieval metal with a touch of Rome-ish Virgin Steele. Very very very good.
- Recommended album: Dim Carcosa
http://www.ancientrites.be/

Eluveitie
- I suppose most people here know them. Lovely folk/death/black metal with lots of flutey parts.
- Recommended album: Spirit
http://www.eluveitie.ch/

Equilibrium
- Again, most people here should know this. They sound like the latest Ensiferum. Epic viking metal though not that heavy.
- Recommended album: Turis Fratyr
http://www.equilibrium-metal.de/

Manegarm
- Also quite famous. This is black/medieval metal in the vein of Morrigan.
- Recommended album: Vredens Tid
http://www.manegarm.com/

Morrigan
- If I'm not mistaken there are some reviews here. Black/medieval stuff like Manegarm.
- Recommended album: Celts
http://www.morrigan.org/

Odroerir
- Viking/Medieval metal. Quite soft though. The folky parts are way better than the metal parts.
- Recommended album: Laßt Euch Sagen Aus Alten Tagen
http://www.odroerir.com/

Wotan
- Viking/Heavy metal with no synths and no keyboards. Truly great stuff.
- Recommended album: Carmina Barbarica
http://www.wotanmetal.com/

Folkearth
- Medieval metal. Quite decent but not that good.
- Recommended album: By The Sword Of My Father
members.lycos.co.uk/folkearth/

Schattentantz
- Medieval metal. Quite good.
- Recommended album: Galgenfrist
http://www.schattentantz.de/

In Extremo
- Medieval metal/rock. Would be better if not for the rocky parts.
- Recommended album: Mein Rasend
http://www.inextremo.de/

There is a thread in the alt. forum and i'm still checking most of the bands there: http://metalreviews.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6972
Viking/folk is turning to be my fav. metal genre and all the thanks go to this forum.

Anyway......

Ancient Rites new album Rubicon is great. I've been listening it straight for two weeks and I can't believe how fast and yet melodic it is.

Eluveitie didn't grab me much but i'll try it some more before giving score.

I also found some great bands:

Thiasos Dionysos - great folk/black one-man project
Some samples:
Siegestanz.mp3
Hymiskvida.mp3
Heidrun.mp3
Recovering Mjoellnir.mp3

Asmegin
Samples:
Af Helvegum.mp3
Bruderov Paa Hægstadtun.mp3
Vargr i Véum - Eilivs Bane

I'll be sure to check every recommendation.

There's a band called Faun that I found the other day on MySpace whom I thought were good. They describe their music as medieval pagan folk and use all kinds of neat instruments.

Faun is Neofolk. Similar bands include Forseti, Gae Bolg, Die Verbatten Kinder Evas and Sieben.

How does it compare to Fatherland and Dim Carcosa? I've heard some samples but I wasn't sure.

Do try it. Either Spirit or the demo, Ven. Its good if you like flute driven stuff.

of all the bands posted, Eluveitie are my favourite. They call themselves celtic/swiss folk metal. and btw, apart from a demo, SPIRIT is their ONLY album...

Eluveitie is amazing. I'd buy their CD if I could track it down anywhere.
