Post subject:  I bought my first Bass

After years of headbanging and dreaming of playing an instrument, my dreams finally materealised. LOL.

I went to Bentley's in Kuala Lumpur. They're the sole distributor for Ibanez in Malaysia. ANd I wanted to make sure I don't get ripped off by buying imitation stuff. I can easily get an Ibanez 5 string for below RM 600, but of course, those are clones...imitations. So there I was, trying out all those lovely basses. The Ibanez I tried were ok, the 5 string's were ok. But somehow I didnt get the satisfaction I wanted when i played powerchords. Then I asked the guy if he had anything else that was good. He passed me this Squier. Made in Indonesia. I was quite sceptical at first. Then I played it, wow not bad. Powerchord........FUCK JESUS!!! The sound was insanely awesome! My shredder friend couldn't believe it as well. He tried it and was like "wo, matcha, this is good shit!" (mathca is the indian slang for dude). I immediately grabbed it. paid RM 930 for it.

Well since this is my first bass, I'd be happy if any of you gave some pointers. It should be helpful. And if any of you are using Squiers yourself, please feel free to comment. Whether it's positive or negative, I'd be happy. :dio:

Squier P Bass Special Edition
-made in Indonesia
-20 frets (only)(i think it's good enough for me)
-Jazz bass neck (I can't help it, I've got small fingers)
-traditional split single-coil P Bass pickup and a J Bass pickup in the bridge
-compared to the ibanez, this is a little heavier, but who cares.

PS. USD 1 = RM 3.80 (you do the math :D )

Save your money! Strings are fucking expensive! And the only advice I can give you now is to practice every day if you're serious!

Yeah, it's quite pricey as well over here. Around RM 100++ for a set of 4. Well I just bought it on the pretence of being serious. Hell yeah! I'm serious! I just gotta manage my time with my college studies though. Somehow I have a gut feeling I'm gonna fail many papers this semester....

They don't break as often as regular guitar strings, but around here they're about $30 and up. That's ridiculous!!

Friend of mine did it onstage once. Didn't have any spares with him at the time.

Oh... I've played bass for 4 years and never done it. I've had to rpelace strings because they went out of tune after like 10 minutes though.

That's because you play pussyemofag music. You sensually and lightly pluck the strings, you don't rock out!

The only people i have seen break bass strings have been stupid punk kids thrahy away like fools. These are the same kids that when they play the guitar they have to change all the strings every time they play it.

If your playing correctly and your not plucking, it puzzles me that they break.

If someone's slapping/popping really REALLY hard, I can see how they can break, but through all the slapping/popping I put my strings through, they still don't break.

Well I think it's not impossible to break a bass string. I've seen people do it. It depends on how you're playing style is and frankly, how you treat ur bass.

By the way, does anyone have any opinions on the pickups? I think it's good for now. Any recommendations?

You wont need new pickups unless you break them.

Well I don't think I would break my pickups, as a matter of fact, it's quite unheard of here. What I meant was replacing it with better ones, whether it's broken or not.

The other day my guitarist splashed out RM 750 on a set of Zakk Wilde Set Pickups. He's very excited.

Not neccesarily. I have never broke pickups but i have changed them to achieve better tone .

And he did get an ibanez so he is either going to love that tone forever, or seek new pickups quickly.

I have had great results with the EMG PJ active pickups. They have a line of them for the 5 string.

Nice...that looks like a pretty sweet bass. Good luck on playing :).

I've been thinking about picking up an instrument for awhile now...I don't really want to play guitar since about a billion other kids my age play, and plus one of my best friends is a really good guitarist so I'd probably get accused of copying or something. I would really like to play drums, except I don't have room in my house to put them anywhere. That leaves bass, so I'm thinking about trying that out.

dude he bought it yesterday, you should get good beofre you start forking out money for things like that. You like the tone in the shop right??? there honestly no need, and pick ups only have a limmited effect on your instruments tone anyway. An amp is a much better way to do it (change you tone), or an effects pedel. Really you won't need to change you pick ups!!

It's quite lucky I don't understand guitars, I just change my eq settings on my amp and thrash. BTW, for those who play gutar what settings do you use? I have:

Bass-2
Mid-10
High/Treble-8

And I play in standard tuning. I think it gives out a great thrash sound. :P
