I was browsing through the Metallica.com forums when i came across this thread:

Kerrang! called Metallica the third most important group of the past 25 years. Any comments?

Here's the entire list:

1. Iron Maiden
2. Guns'N'Roses
3. Metallica
4. AC/DC
5. Green Day
6. Ozzy Osbourne
7. Slayer
8. Faith No More
9. Pantera
10. Nirvana
11. Bon Jovi
12. Korn
13. Judas Priest
14. Blink 182
15. Nine Inch Nails
16. Fugazi
17. Napalm Death
18. Black Flag
19. Soundgarden
20. Slipknot
21. Def Leppard
22. Marilyn Manson
23. Emperor
24. Rage Against The Machine
25. Motorhead

A few people were asking why Black Sabbath werent listed in the top 25 bands. And Lepplin and Van Halen for that matter. Considering Sabbath released their debut in 1970, it was 36 years ago, possibly kerrang thought their importance and impact only happened in Sabbath's first 10-15 years.
Yet Sabbath have been around in the last 25 years and still to this day have made an impact on the metal culture.

Then i see some dickwit write this comment:

BLACK SABBATH HAVE NOT DONE ANYTHING IN THE PAST 25 YEARS THAT HAS SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED MODERN POPULAR CULTURE. SINCE THE MAJORITY OF THEIR IMPACT WAS WELL OVER 25 YEARS AGO TO SAY THEY HAVE DIRECTLY AFFECTED MODERN POPULAR CULTURE IS STUPID. THIS IS NOT TO SAY SABBATH HAD NO INFLUENCE AT ALL ON POPULAR CULTURE IN THE PAST HOWEVER THEY HAVE HAD NO, THAT WORD AGAIN, NO EFFECT ON MODERN POPULAR CULTURE

I know this will bring a nice debate at metalreviews, what are your thoughts, people?

P.S- There is also a poll in the metallica.com forums asking "Do you like St. Anger: Yes or No? I was shocked to see that 80% picked.....YES....WTF

Another crap magazine, another crap list.

Seriously... GnR? Did they influence anybody significant at all? I love some of their stuff, but they're the last great Hurrah of mainstream trashy hard rock. They never had any impact on future developments whatsoever- except for financing the short lived success of Velvet Revolver.

And groans at Emperor being thrown in as the token EXTREME NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL UNDERGROUND COMBO. THEY BURN TEH CHURCHIZ!!!1!

I cant believe Van Halen were not on that list. Van Halen were America's equal to the UK's Def Leppard. They both changed the "normal" ways of metal bands before them. The clothes, the lifestyle, the lyrics and songwriting.

With their 1978 eponymous debut, Van Halen simultaneously rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefined what an electric guitar could do, developing a blindingly fast technique with a variety of self-taught two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and effects that mimicked the sounds of machines and animals.
I call that an influence on the metal culture...how many guitarists after Eddie tried to copy his techniques??

If Def Leppard is on that list, why the hell isnt Van Halen.
Van Halen then paved the way for Motley Crue and Poison and all the others.

I'm wondering how Soundgarden managed to make it onto the list. I'm guessing they helped bring their sound of hardrock/metal into the mainstream from the underground, the link you could say. Possibly helped start the grunge revolution. But was their influence a MAJOR influence?

Good question. Why not Alice In Chains or Pearl Jam.Those 2 bands even though I don't like them were much bigger then Soundgarden ever were.Surprise that those 2 bands didn't make the list.

With this being said I want to say something.

Dead Machine I have no clue what provoked your attitude but I'm not going to get into it with you.If you found my opinion offensive then I apologize but I'm still sticking by it because I do believe that there are bands out there that deserve to be on that list then those who I put in bold.If you disagree then fine but you could have been a little bit more objective instead of insulting me.

I remember you drove Clint from this forum with the same attitude and it's a shame because I found your reviews when you were a reviewer on this site to be very well written but now it seems like you have swallowed a bitter pill or something since you stepped down.

But now you are no different then guys like Leee who have to come onto forums and start shit because someone disagrees with them or doesn't like their music, etc.

If you don't like a peticular opinion then fine but there are better ways to present your own opinion into a discussion without calliing people an idiot, moron, stupid, etc it shows that you are immature and can't handle an aurgument in a more civil manner.

Finally I want to close this post by saying no hard feelings and if you still think I'm a moron then fine but I won't lose sleep over it and I'm still going to be on this site.

Well if we are on the subject of death/extreme metal why not Death itself why aren't they on there didn't they invent death metal?

And why not Helloween, without them power metal might not have been where it is today with bands like Gamma Ray all the way to Cellador continuing on the tradition.

They aren't there because the list is shit. It isn't the point who is left out, it is how come you left of Napalm Death. Do you ever listen to any extreme metal at all? ND is too important.

I left them out because I believe there are bands that are more important and deserve to be on that list.

But you're right the list is indeed shit and let's just say we agree to disagree and leave it on that note.

Such as WHAT? What band could possibly have been more influential on an entire generation of jazz artists and hundreds of other bands than NAPALM DEATH? Some power metal band like Helloween? I bet you want to cut ND from the list 'cause you mostly listen to power metal and don't think that extreme metal is important.

No, see, the difference between leeeee and me is that I'm not a fool. I don't start shit if I don't think that the shit needs starting, and nowadays I'm very laid back and don't start shit much. Leeeeee only posts when he wants to start shit.

No, you see, all arguments are just various forms of "You're stupid" in disguise anyway. Someone as thick as you isn't going to change your opinion anyway, so why bother civilly reasoning with you when it'll just go in one ear and out the other? If you were someone with more IQ points I might consider debating civilly, but since you have yet to prove to anyone that you have any purpose other than bashing Eyesore, then why should I bother?

What a shame, I'd love to see you leave, waste of bandwidth.

Nope. Which is why Possessed should be on the list.

By the way, I understand you probably don't care a whole lot about emo, but consider the world of music as a whole right now? Emo's huge at the moment, and I don't know where it would be without Fugazi. Granted, all this mainstream emo sucks ass, but I'm sure it would be something equally terrible in its place. And from the little Fugazi I've heard, they were good stuff.

Honestly, I think that might be one of the better lists published by a crappy magazine that I've seen. Don't get me wrong, it could still be heavily improved, but none of these ever turn out remotely decent, so this exceeded my ridiculously low expectations.

Oh yeah, obviously there are hundreds of bands that could go on that list, but out of those that are there, only a few I would take off. Fugazi are not one of them. Fugazi are fucking amazing and EXTREMELY influential. They deserve the nod even if the guy who compiled it probably couldn't name one Fugazi song.
