Post subject:  Rob Zombie Writing New Halloween Movie!

This sounds badass! He ain't fucking with a sequel, he's starting something new. I wonder, though, is he axing Myers? I find it odd they'd call it Halloween without him, but if it's with him is it not a sequel? Anyway, I can't wait...

MTV.com is reporting that Rob Zombie has commented further on the announcement over the weekend that he has been tapped to revive the successful "Halloween" franchise, some 28 years after accomplished horror director John Carpenter's influential slasher flick first introduced the world to Michael Myers, an escaped mental patient who massacred his family on Halloween night.

In a message posted on Zombie's MySpace page last week, the rocker shot down rumors that he'd been in discussions with Dimension Films to breathe new life into the pale-masked Myers.

"I don't know how this story all got started but I am not making 'Halloween 9'," he wrote in a post dated June 3. The next morning, he clarified the situation in a separate post, writing, "I am not making 'Halloween 9'. That series is done, complete, over. But what I am doing is starting totally from scratch. Call it a remake, an update, a re-imagining or whatever, but one thing that [is] for sure is this is a whole new start — a new beginning with no connection to the other series. That is exactly why the project appeals to me. I can take it and run with it."

Before accepting the job, Zombie told Variety he'd reached out to Carpenter, seeking his blessing.

"The original 'Halloween' is hallowed ground to me, and I talked to him about it and he was very supportive of what I wanted to do," Zombie said. "He said, 'Go for it, Rob. Make it your own.' And that's exactly what I intend to do. Over 25 years and a lot of movies, a very scary character became something of a Halloween cliché, with Michael Myers dolls that play the Halloween music when you press their stomachs. By the end of the sequel cycle, there was little connection to the original. I take that film very seriously, and I want to make it terrifying again."

Zombie's "Halloween" film is slated for an October 2007 release.

Well, if Richard Carpenter said it was OK, why not?

The Carpenters are on-topic, especially since you mentioned them first.

Back on topic.

I don't know what to make of this. Please, please, please, Rob, don't say you're remaking Halloween. Whatever I thought of his films, I always felt he was someone that understood that classic horror films should not be remade. I mean... Dawn of the Dead, TCM, the Omen, and now Halloween? Is nothing sacred anymore?

On the other hand, he seems to be suggesting that it isn't really a remake... something similar but different... it's a little bit incoherent... I'd love to see him do a Halloween sequel, but for fuck's sake not another remake.

Allright, here's the deal. The original Halloween series wasn't intended to be about Micheal Myers. The original plan was for Myers to be a two-story arc and then done. Hence "Season of the Witch" had no Myers, and was supposed to be the start of the Serial Stories, if you will. Different stories for each movie that revolved around the holiday of Halloween. Needless to say, Season was so bad that in order to save the franchise they had to make Myers the focal point.

So it sounds like Rob will be going back to the original plan, and will be making movies about the holiday of Halloween. That's fine, but I don't think this will go over well.

Well, if that's true then it sounds more interesting. I heard Rob's next film was going to be a non-horror, so this is news to me.

I didn't know there was a Halloween film without Myers. No shocker there, I'm very picky about horror so I don't watch a lot of it.

I know a lot of people have issues with House Of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects, but I think they're both very good movies. Sure, House was very similar to a certain famous horror movie, but that wasn't a copycat move, it was a tribute. Rob said from day one that that was his intention. And considering how much chopping and editing he had to do just to get it released I still think it came out good. If you recall the movie was dropped a few times because it was too gory. Sadly he doesn't own the rights to any of the edited shit so he can't release a director's cut. :(

The Devil's Rejects was great, but far less horror and more of an action film with horror-like depraved characters. I think if you expected a horror movie you'd be disappointed, but not having expectations I thought it was great.

Either way, his visuals are awesome and the dialogue is great. Maybe you don't like the story, that's cool, but I think Zombie is bound to release a classic movie at some point in his life. Will Halloween be it? No idea. Maybe it was Crow III?

I bet it's gonna be a really stupid movie not worth the price you pay for the ticket.

Considering the history of this series, I'd be skeptical about anyone doing a sequel. Sure, it's admirable if they plan to take the series somewhere else and finally put Michael Myers back into the ground, but at this point I just think the series has gone too far to ever be able to go back to Carpenter's original vision. And that's all assuming someone I didn't know was directing...but Rob Zombie? This is gonna be painful.
