Ravi Shankar is one of the most influential musicians of the past century. He, George Harrison, and the culture of the San Franciscan late sixties introduced the sitar and Indian music to the Western world. These are indeniable truths. I myself listen to raga-based Indian music. Is there anyone else here who does, or has experience with it?

I quite like Bhangra, which is very different to what you're on about, but not listened to much other. Feel like uploading some so I and others can get a better idea? :)

I did a module on Indian Classical music at college, and did some performances of it. Hard.

Two ragas by Ravi Shankar:

Hari Om

Sarve Shaam

These should work.

More mp3's can be found at:http://minomus.narod.ru/Poba/Music/Ravi/Ravi.html

Although this was invented in India there is not much Indian spirit in it. There are some exceptions but mostly this comes across as shallow music from fashion Buddhists for modern hippies.

As for Ravi Shankar, this is simply over my head.
One Raga that does it for me is this famous one (L. Shankar, not Ravi):

Besides, I like the westernized simplified approach, e.g. Shakti

I don't know much about Indian music, but i do know a couple of things:

Ravi Shankar is fucking awesome.

Goa-trance sucks. Gay dance music for bisexual drug addicts. Goa-trance also doesn't have anything to do with Indian music. It was invented in India by westerners.

Some facts to back up your opinion:
I frequently listen to (good) Goa Trance.
I never dance to it.
I have never had same-sex venery nor do I whish to have it.
I'm not a drug addict.
"One drug only: music!" is a slogan in parts of the Goa scene.
