ten will be hard.. here's a possible top three sneak preview:

1) Robert Fripp
2) King BUZZO
3) Tony Iommi

picked mostly for the way they define my tastes.

01. Steve Clark
02. Dimebag
03. Jon Schaffer
04. Devin Townsend
05. Dave Wyndorf
06. Michael Hedges
07. Tim Mahoney
08. Dan Swano
09. Chris DeGarmo
10. Kurt Cobain

All random order except number 1. And yes, Kurt Cobain. Hate him all you want for his simple style, he still wrote badass songs.

If you want to see one of the baddest guitarist to ever play, check out this clip: MICHAEL HEDGES. It's a little grainy, but just watch it and try and follow what is going on, you'll see him playing multiple guitar lines all at once. He's playing a harp guitar in the first song, a harp guitar has bass strings, as well as guitar strings and he's playing them all at once like there's two guitarists playing. The second song is just him going nuts, listen to him using the guitar body as percussion. The dude was fucking amazing! He died in a car crash, though, in 1997. :(

I'm not saying these guys are the best on a technical level, or the best songwriters or whatever. I just like 'em.

Adrian Smith
Gus G
Dave Mustaine
Kai Hansen
Stefan Weinerhall
Tony Iommi
Richie Blackmore
Timo Tolkki
Luca Turilli
Alexi Laiho

These are mostly off the top of my head except Gus, H, Tony and Kai.

1. John Christ (very very skilled)
2. Dave Murray (makes it look so natural)
3. Ross the Boss (pure fun)
4. Morten Veland (style not ability)
5. Tony Iommi (as above)
6. The guy from Wolfsbane (mental blank)

that's all I can think of at the moment.

somehow I prefer Matt Pike's work in Sleep.

what does everyone think of Fredrik Thordendal? Meshuggah dude? If you've heard those dark interludes in Catch 33 then you know why I'm mentioning him..

1. I was only putting the band name after so people knew who they were in. Sleep > HOF.

2. He's great. I missed lots out of my top ten, so I'm not going to go back and keep editing it.

the dudes from meshuggah
the dude from nevermore
the dude from arsis
the dude from richie kotzen
the dude that played with richie kotzen on richie kotzen/greg howe 'tilt'
the dudes from soilwork
the dudes from dillinger escape plan
the dude from spastic ink
the dude from necrophagist
the dude from zero hour
the dude from canvas solaris

not in order *at all*, or based on technical ability, but i find those bands entertaining to listen to mostly because of their guitarist(s)
