If you want to be able to shred you HAVE to learn the Major scale in all 7 positions!!(or the modes) If you do this then you can shred all the way down the guitar and stay in key!! By learning the Major scale in this way you are also learning the minor scales so you will be killing two birds with one stone! This is also great for things like jazz, and other genres that use lots of modes.

This site is a great place to learn scales. on the left side, click G and then the Major scale. You will see a lot of numbers and it will look pretty daunting! don't be put off!! The concept is very simple! start at number one! the work up to number seven, and the back to number one! but you MUST play three notes per string!!! This will help you with speed later!! The second position of the Major scale begins at number two on the scale, and work in the same way as before, the third position starts from number three and so on!
