World Coming Down is indeed fantastic.
However, some of the most depressing music I've ever heard was somma 'dat Funeral Doom people reccomended in the Doom forum (Thanks, guys!

Whats the most depressing music you guys have ever heard? For me I think nothing beats World Coming Down by Type O Negative....I was just wondering everyones picks because its one of my favorite albums ever and I'd like to hear similar things. ..Sorry if this topic has already been created. |

Yep, Skepticism in particular do make you very depressed and lonely. anything minimalistic can be made to be depressing to varying degrees.. Xasthur's music is oppressive in its minimalism where as Kraftwerk is distant and cold. I like both techniques. |

Escalation 666 by Helloween. That song just has such a sad tone IMO (especially the chorus). Also, believe it or not, Struck A Nerve by Machine Head. Particularly when the tempo slows down and it goes into that more groove-oriented riff. I always found something kind of depressing about that (especially with the way the main key was dropped from C# to B). There are probably plenty more but I can't really think of them right now. |

This is a great topic... In theory Funeral Doom is THE most depressive shit ever... but ths more popish love songs are what get me the most... stuff like Type O, Bright Eyes (Digital Ash In A Digital Urn is an album I can relate to inmensely), Stars or 3EB can get me deeper than other grimmer stuff because I sort of relate to it... Maybe the music isn't depressive per se, but that relationship with it makes it specialy depressive for me. |

For me music only depresses through association. An upbeat song that reminds me of a depressing time is still depressing. For example- I find the Macarena throughly miserable, because I am reminded that it while listening to songs like that that I realised how socially inadequate and awkward I am. Music like funeral doom: If it is done well it makes me happy, strangely enough. Music that is performed well usually makes me happy in some way, no matter what it is like styllistically. So sorry, Nortt- you don't depress me, quite the opposite in fact

Leviathan and Xasthur for BM Good call, Xasthur has one of the few BM songs that depress me, Murdered Echoes of the Mind. And I agree with Rio, even though certain music genres/bands are more inherently depressive, the personal link (or association as Rio says) with it, is what makes it so depressive. I have many depressing memories linked to songs I love, so when I go to them I usually remember things that get me down. |

I find Anathema very depressing. Lost Control, Angelica, A Dying Wish, One Last Goodbye... All very depressing songs. I have a different contact with Anathema songs. I don't know why. |

I have Turn Loose the Swans and I like it a lot, but it has nothing to do with Viva Emptiness. Which albums by A and MDB should I get if I want a Viva Emptiness approach? |

Hard to say about MDB, because they're always much heavier than Katatonia. I think their strongest album is The Light at the End of the World, but this is very different to Katatonia. As for Anathema, I love "Eternity". There are a few weak tracks on it but the best ones are very deeply emotional. |

The Viva Emptiness approach is kind of not there, but I suggest you give Alternative 4 and Eternity a shot. And The Silent Enigma is a must if you want doom that's actually heavy. It's my favourite btw. |

Rio and Daniel said it all, and I could make a countless list out of bands that sound depressing to me, but currently my favourite "sad" genre would be dark folk/neofolk and if I had to pick one band it would be Of the Wand & the Moon. |

I'm a weird ass as usual; stuff like Xasthur or various Funeral Doom bands sound somewhat soothing to me, it's stuff I actually like to listen to when I feel down because the dark feelings expressed therein make me feel less lonely, in a "I'm not the only one who feels like shit" way (for one, Xasthur helped me through several sleepless nights when my lady abandoned me with pretty much not a single reason left to live for). I find Pink Floyd have some of the most depressive songs ever, stuff like Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Comfortably Numb and Wish You Were Here never leave me untouched. Also, Radiohead have many, many sad numbers, Street Spirit (Fade Out) being one of my absolute faves. |
