I had to start a thread because I've had it with djent riffs. I'll always love and respect Meshuggah, but I am done with the sound they spawned. It doesn't sound cool or heavy anymore, it just drags down some bands I'd otherwise really like.

Anything really bugging you lately, either rationally or slightly less rationally?

black metal that sounds like 1000 other black metal bands. This has been going on for a while though.

Amen. The 'are they a burzum clone or a darkthrone clone' game has been going on a couple decades now.

That distinct style of black/death known as 'war metal' is increasingly played out. Getting to the point where certain labels (NWN! and Iron Bonehead eg) are over-indulging in aesthetics over content.

Over compression in modern metal production!! Kills all the dynamics in the loud and soft sections of the songs leaving records that sound dull and lifeless. End the goddamn loudness wars already!

Also, programmed drums. All the typewriter click drumming shit can fuck right off. I don't care that they're not perfectly synched or that the double bass doesn't have that perfect even sound. Smooth it out a bit, but don't take the human factor completely out of the game. You absolutely can't replace the feel and swagger of the human machine, especially in a live setting. Science has my back here: https://www.mic.com/articles/113504/science-shows-why-drum-machines-will-never-replace-live-drummers

Man, missing the live shows real bad. Fucking die off already, Covid-19.

Both good observations in very different areas, guys. Thanks for taking the topic and running.
