I have been saving some money for the past while so in a few years from now (after I graduate) I can possess enough to purchase a humble condo. In doing so, I have significantly decreased my music buying habits mainly due to cancelling my credit card which was source of all my insane spending. As of now, I still buy 5 or 6 albums on average per 2 weeks. The price of buying good metal has gone up, specially on Amazon. Right now I have about 650-ish albums all on disc.

Now my question is this. Do you have any methods in spending less on music, and enjoying more, the music which you already possess? For example, I listen to tracks on Youtube and try gain insight if the album is worth the purchase, and moreover, does it have any replay value. Of course, there is always the "revisiting of albums" making them worth the investment. Indeed, buying quite successful albums at the right time might make the album valuable several years down the line.

So share your methods and strategies of buying less, saving more, and enjoying the music you own more so than before.

Buy them used either in store or on E-Bay. You'll save half, if not more, off the original purchase price. Obviously, some of the more obscure stuff will be more difficult to find but with a little patience, much awesome metal can be acquired this way. I too do the Youtube preview route before purchasing most new music, but it's still fun to do blind buys every now and again like the old days.

Streaming services seem to be the future. Both CD sales and digital sales have plateaued, undoubtedly due to the competition of streaming services.

I'm currently evaluating Apple Music. I like it because I can tag stuff as 'my library' and it appears alongside my purchased and ripped music as one big library. 99% of the metal I am looking for seems to be in the catalog (even obscure stuff), and for the other 1% I can purchase the CD and rip it. For $10 US/month, it seems almost too good to be true.

I should also note that I subscribe to iTunes Match to automatically sync ripped stuff, but I don't think that is necessary if you manually sync. I'm just lazy.
