How do you like to listen to your music?

I do it both ways, but I definitely prefer when I'm listening with headphones on.

Nothing like laying in bed and listening to a record or two with no disruptions.

Headphones, mainly because my laptop speakers aren't up to the job.

Speakers, only because I have crap headphones right now.

I prefer headphones. First, I have a great pair. And second, my sister has migraines so speakers aren't the best option. I would love to get a good pair of speakers one of these days just because a friend of mine has them and they sound absolutely fantastic. The mass of sound is incredible. I am at this point quite content with my headphones as I paid over 280 for them and they do job quite well. Ultimately, however, I would like to have speakers.

Decent pair of speakers > any headphones, sound-wise, although I probably end up listening on headphones more often because walking is my favourite or at least most common time to listen to music.

I think a good pair of headphones can't be beat. Unless you have a mansion, a room strictly designed for music listening, and a thirty thousand dollar sound system, headphones around 400 bucks will give you sound stage and spaciousness without all the grand designs. And there's nothing like the intimacy of headphones.

Speakers when I'm at home (roommates be damned), headphones when I am out.

This is one of those things where I don't understand how it's even a debate. Headphones exist for when listening with speakers isn't possible. I can't imagine choosing headphones if you have the option between the two.

Well, I must say that your imagination doesn't escape very far, does it :) ? Paying 700 bucks for a pair of headphones can be as good, or even better than a decent pair of speakers. High fidelity headphones are an excellent and intimate way of listening to music and also hearing details which you haven't heard before. Unless your spending a minium of 5 grand for just a pair speakers, set aside the receiver and the amp. Then, it's a different story.

I guess I could agree with you if we're talking REALLY nice studio monitors or something. I was amazed at the sound of a Nine Inch Nails record when I was studying Audio in college while we listened to it in the studio.

At home I just have regular computer speakers so it's not quite the same.

idk I'd take my old thrift store speakers and dad's hand me down amplifier over any headphones I've listened to which includes pretty fancy Grado/Shure/Sennheiser stuff. You can hear more detail on headphones which can be fun with heavily layered stuff like Nine Inch Nails, but having the sound fired directly into my ear is imo an experience that is fundamentally lacking and less enjoyable. Ain't no space for the sound to fill and the instruments to live & breathe.

Interesting.

I actually feel like albums can lose their effect, their oomph when played on speakers. I like the controlled heavy-handed distillation that headphones provide. Pallbearer is one band of note recently that really sounded flat in my car stereo, which by no means is great, but still it doesn't even compare to my bargain headphones. Anyways, I know nothing about high fidelity music and so I'll just stop now.

Bought the Bowers & Wilkins P7 hi-fi headphones a few days ago. They're the same sound system used at Abbey Road Studios. Absolutely phenomenal. The tag price was $400 excluding tax. Well worth the price if you ask me. The sound design used in the headphones are the same sound system used in their hi-fi speakers which speaks volumes about their delivery.
