http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQFHT0pxka8 that's a video of Slipknot performing "People = Shit" in Lisbon in 2004*. at about the 1:40 mark the two extra drums kick in, but it sounds different from the album version of the song or any live version i've seen, must have been a fuck up on the recording. anyway i think it sounds awesome. i want to ask you guys what you feel about "tribal" drumming in metal, like a massive drum sound that sounds like several people doing it at once. not in a boring "Kaiowas" way**, but properly integrated into a full-on metal song like Slipknot*** accidentally ended up doing in that concert. do any bands do that? *i think they are terrible but i did see them live that day since it was part of the Rock in Rio Lisboa festival, Sepultura and Metallica played the same day. they might be crap but they do put on a great show. **Kaiowas is a nice song but it's more a non-metal interlude you know. ***don't care to discuss whether Slipknot are actual metal or not, i think you know what i meant when i said that. |

You've mentioned Sepultura, but Soulfly are the obvious ones that come to mind for me re sound and not actually having two drummers, eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Sl5-Cl6LOo Especially on their older stuff though. I think Kylesa have had two drummers since 2006, but they don't use them in a tribal way. Ditto Melvins. sorry i took so long to reply. shit internet at home and no sound at the office. like the drumming in that Soulfly song... shame most of what i heard from them is so crap. i mean this big, thundering drumming, i still think it's a bit weird that you don't see it so often. Not exactly what you're looking for, but look into African metal. Ian Christe has posted links on Invisible Oranges in a few separate articles. Most of it is rather derivative in a fun way. I think the band's name is Skindred and they sound like Iron Maiden with local African mythology supplying the content as opposed to Western tales. But beyond that, other bands do similar stuff that we might recognize but then incorporate local instruments. New types of percussion might be mixed in there, I'm just not sure off the top of my head. Something to consider, I guess. Sadly, I'm painting Africa with one large brush, but yeah the IO articles have best bands across the continent and some specific country analyses. |

Skindred are Welsh... Although they do have reggae and ska influences, but I'm assuming it's not the band you're thinking of! |
