I imagine that there are other people like this, but I rather compulsively try to check out new music. Much less so than in the past mind you, but I still constantly am getting new albums and what not obviously past the point of being able to listen to it all. I feel like it is almost an addiction at this point, but does anyone have any advice as to how to lower one's intake of new music and just settle with what you have? I don't know if I necessarily want to do that, but it's a nice thought sometimes.

I'm the same and, checking the recent purchases list, I'm sure there are many like us among forumites and team.

My addiction goes a little further since I review (in French) every album I buy.

I wasn't listening to anything new for a while other than once in a while. That gets boring though. You want to check out new music.

I mean if you're wasting a bunch of money on new cd's that sucks...just download but you can't just sit around and listen to the same shit over and over.

I feel like I have cultivated a rather awesome taste and I kinda just want to bask in it, but I always check out new stuff and am distracting myself from the classics. Reviewing isn't helping lol.

I think that it is important to try new artists, but there is a balance. When i started the reviewing deal, all of a sudden I was flooded with promo's and what not from way too many bands to listen to in a decent amount of time, and therefore I kind of grew numb to new music (not a good thing).

For me personally, I find that I appreciate a new album more if I buy the physical copy, meaning that I have invested into it and have a personal connection to it, rather than just getting emailed some files. Sure there are misses that I regret buying, but that is part of the experience that I enjoy.

Guess the key word here is moderation :)

Very very rarely listen to new artists, mainly because they have little to offer. Both me and in general. Close-minded yes, but I don't really care. I also don't feel like exploring as much as I used to. My latest favorite band is Moonsorrow I think, and I started listening to them about 2 years ago.

I like checking new stuff out but I don't really like the production (too mechanical and artificial) and style of many new bands (too much drumming not enough riffage in many instances).

As you can tell by my "Now Playing" posts I'm mainly 1980s - 1999.

I check new stuff out constantly and will continue to do so till I die. I have a month sometimes where I get stuck on a album or 3 but for the most part I try to listen to a new album at least once a week and incorporate it into my listening library.

@trapt. Dude??? Why would you want to stop listening to new music? New music is what keeps your cultivated taste cultivated. An open mind towards new music can open doors to music and artists that you may not of liked or whatever the fuck I'm trying to say.

Bottom line- keep listening to new music. You can always bask in the music you have acquired and listen to new shit. Even if you did stop using and listening to new music Trapt, what happens when you play everything you have out and you get bored? What then?

I just read threw the other posts. Wtf? Dude you guys are talking like music has died and completely fell off and is just shit now. And a couple of you guys write reviews don't you? There are great new artists out there I could list many. I totally understand respecting the classics and stuff but to say new artists are boring like that is kinda silly.

Idk I need new music. I don't want to listen to the same songs and albums over and over till they lose all meaning and make you want to cut your wrists every time they come on. New artists and new music is necessary for music lovers. At least I thought it was.

I don't understand what is happening here   :omfg:

My problem is that my intake of new music is rather high and so in order to get into this year's newest music. I very rarely get a chance to listen to older stuff.

Unlike others, I still think there are tons of great new acts, but if you're tastes are narrow then you're not going to find those folks who do interesting things. There are some folks in metal like that. I think power metal fans instantly. If there isn't a great death metal release this year, I don't give no fucks because there have been outstanding grindcore and drone acts.

I'm always digging for new stuff and discovering and re-discovering the past. I think music for us here at the 'reviews is much more than a habit. It's a way of life. It's a belief...

I used to listen to tons of new music but then I realized two or three years ago I was doing it just to be "in the know" with the latest stuff people were talking about and to post my opinion on rateyourmusic.com. Since then I tend to start at the beginning instead of the present when I approach a band's discography. So the only new music I listen to is either debut albums (not many) or stuff by bands I already like.

I also only listen to albums I haven't heard before in situations where I can pay full attention to them. Which reduces the flow of jumping from one novel album to another while I'm browsing the internet.

While there are tons of great bands out there releasing new stuff, there is still so much that I havent heard that is already out there. Black Metal, Death Metal, and other areas I havent even seriously checked out yet. Its hard to find time for all of it.

Asteroid being the only "new" band I like. Besides them, there hasn't been anything truly new to hear in a while. New music mostly sucks.

I feel like people are discussing two different subjects here, new music as in newly released or new music to oneself? Anyways, haven't heard a new band that stunned me in either of the categories for a while. Still check out new stuff though because one it clicks with something previously unknown it's quite a great trip.

True. I was originally just referring to music new to myself.

This too.

By new music I meant "new to me", I really don't care when it was released.

iTunes is telling me that I've added 2 new albums in the last month. My taste for new music has apparently shrunken quite a bit.
