Never heard that band, but you are asking about the ep. Have you heard their full-length, Cendres Et Sang?

And good call on the reminder for Ruins Zad, I had meant to listen to them before.

No, why?

Am I missing anything by only buying the studio albums of bands I'm interested in?

The very famous Made in Japan by the legendary Deep Purple immediately comes to mind.

Edit:

Mayhem - Live in Leipzig

Another legendary album.

So is there anything in Dimmu Borgir or Behemoth's catalog that I should avoid?

Nah. Dudes never wrote a bad album in their lives. Apostasy has the most drop off in quality, but still has some bangers.

Phantasmagoria was rather uninspired. Then again, it is only half the two man band, now.

Any bands I should avoid (not sure if I've already asked this)?

Nah, just listen to what we've suggested collectively and then come back to us with what you liked and what you didn't like.

Velvet Cacoon? Wrath of the Weak? Worth checking out?

No, fuck that band. Their black metal material was a bunch of overhyped nonsense (Genevieve era) and then when they became shoegazers it came out that they stole another band's material.

Genevieve is fine even though the guy is right, its basically nothing but programmed drumming and stolen riffs from Hvis Lyset tar oss. The rest is like blackened ambient, you're better off just getting Genevieve and maybe Atropine if you like a little ambient influenced black metal

Has anyone else heard this album? If so, what are your thoughts?

Okay, so the aptly named playlist "Thomas tries on death metal. Again", is spinning with the likes of Obituary, Carcass, Pestilence, Entombed etc. Of course I have heard alot of this before but I figured I'd try it again. Right now my playlist looks like this. Anything I should really get onto there? I know Possessed isn't there. But I like them already.

Obituary - Cause of Death
Obituary - Slowly we Rot
Morbid Angel - Covenant (Well this is awesome)
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Carcass - Heartwork
Carcass - Swansong
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Pestilence - Doctrine
Pestilence - Testimony of the Ancients
Cryptopsy - None so Vile

Swansong isn't really Death Metal, but you should add Necroticism anyway. Some Bolt Thrower (Warmaster?) and Vader (Litany?). Few others:

Deicide's debut
Asphyx (eg Deathhammer)
Autopsy (eg Macabre Eternal)
Cannabis Corpse (eg From Wisdom to Baked)
Nile (eg Annihilation of the Wicked)

Check that Hannes Grossman album I reviewed a few weeks ago out too, you should dig it.

All of those you mentioned are now added. I liked Nile a great deal back in the day, and I have also enjoyed Autopsy. This fills things out nicely. Thanks!

Death is one of my fav bands, but thanks for the reminder anyway. Fits nicely here.

Adding the rest now, thanks.
