Lyric videos seem like a format suited to Dylan. This song has a nice swing to it and I think age suits Bob's voice. I'll admit it: I liked this.

The self-assuredness of a 79 year old Dylan contrasts nicely with the teenage angst shown here: https://youtu.be/kwxj-9GF1Qs

Hooray!

Not bad, but I think Code Orange suits her (and the others?) better. Still, vaguely like these guys before they went terrible/excellent (haven't listened other than this in long enough to make my mind up!)

Offspring had a great guitar tone on their first few albums, and these particular leads are pleasant too. I'd say they probably held up better than Green Day, though I still really like this track. https://youtu.be/Zo51mCz4y1I

I never got into Green Day, although this is far from terrible. Great build-up, to a catchy but not unskilled song. I guess American Idiot etc had come to define them for me, I'll have to try their earlier stuff again.

Now I'm racking my brain for punk stuff from back in the day! Here's a name that comes to mind:

This Leftover Crack is pleasant and catchy but like a lot of punk/rockish songs the song structure is very standard, whereas Adventures ability to constantly shift song structures is a big reason I like them a lot. That Green Day song I linked is unfortunately a rare time when they played around with song structure.

Staying loosely within punk but slightly towards math rock with this: https://youtu.be/VG9VhC0hiTg

Another band you've introduced me to! I like the drumming, and the general laid-back vibe.

One of the few bands I'm vaguely aware of in this style, that you're probably far more knowledgeable on:

Awesome! Yeah, someone way more knowledgeable in the genre informed me a few months back that the My Chemical Romance>Bring me the Horizon 2000-2010s popularized conception of 'Emo' is totally different from the 'Emotive Hardcore' sound that developed in the 80s and 90s. Sunny Day Real Estate, like American Football, is an excellent example of that 90s sound, and Diary is a great album. Seven is a great track, and another track from Diary, In Circles, made reexamine the entire genre, and was it startling how it anticipated bands like Deftones vocally. Listen to that track if you haven't heard it before, and I'll post another recommendation or two in this area in the future, but I think linking this band instead is a fun style shift. https://youtu.be/dmnNX7DHP-g?list=LLZ0AO31Ur3LYR2ISFda1G7A

Yes, the genuine emo vs media "emo" thing is kinda this gen's version of real vs fake goth, isn't it? I do like melodic hardcore in general, and did check In Circles out and can hear the Deftones roots there.

Ah, Pantera! Always fun and somehow always in the mood for them, but they're not a band I seek out often apart from a handful of favourite songs (Cowboys from Hell & Becoming especially). Was thinking of these guys up next before this when we were still talking melodic/proggy 'core who I was introduced to recently, and although more cerebral than Phil and the boys I think they still have a blunt punch to them.

Implying Pantera weren't cerebral? Well certainly not lyrically. This Thoughts Dictate Reality is good. Tosin Abasi understandably has a ton of hype as a guitarist (and I love that he counts the perpetually in Tomas Haake's shadow Fredrik Thordendal as one of his favorite guitarists), but Animals is Leaders generally lacks the punch that I'm looking for: this fits the bill, will check out the rest of this album, thanks for sharing!

Hadn't heard of TTNG before, thanks for this. Instrumentally this is great, especially the guitar and drums; the typically whiny alt/emo vocals always take a little longer to work their magic on me, although they're far from terrible. Over a little soon, and without a real direction, if I'm being overly harsh, but I did enjoy it while it lasted.

Don't think I've pushed these guys before (other than a review) (but if I have, apologies). The general proggy vibe reminded me of them, although the British prog vibe is very different to the (edit, nevermind, TTNG are British too! So I guess there's a Porcupine Tree - y school and a more math-y one, if we quantify and classify this stuff!)

Yeah, I expected TTNG to be American like American Football/Sunny Day, really surprised me to find out they were from your side of the pond too. If your hangup is with alt vocals then my hangup is with prog vocals, but I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy these Godsticks vocals. The wankery was kept mostly to a minimum as well which I very much liked, and I have to agree with the Radiohead comparisons in the comment sections, though I liked this a little more than I like Radiohead typically. Speaking of more bands from Britain: https://youtu.be/l4GA2yu0KdI

Interesting! Like a British Deftones, almost. A name to remember.

Chino gives this run of the mill LoG track a major lift at the end. Moreno has guested on a ton of stuff since White Pony, but I think I'll switch it up a little. As much as I'm tempted to post Passenger with MJK, I think this collab with the great Jerry Cantrell is even better.

Agreed Thrash. Passenger is great too, but I love this track, Jerry is great on it and the crushing end gets me every time.

Glad you liked the track I linked Goat, apparently Chino was so impressed with Loathe's Deftones impression that he shared this track on his social media and said he loved it. Loathe alternates between Deftones sounds and really djenty metalcore, they aren't bad at the latter but I definitely prefer the former. I'm a terribly sporadic Deftones fan even though they were one of the first 'metal' bands I listened to and imo Moreno is one of the best vocalists in the history of heavy music.

Since Thrash is around, thoughts on this band's comeback? https://youtu.be/yUdzQ3pxaiM?list=LLZ0AO31Ur3LYR2ISFda1G7A

Dig the new track. A very 'metal' answer to Take This Job and Shove It. The modern production doesn't do them any favors though. Feels like a lost track from the Rob Dukes era of Exodus. The band have also fallen in love with Holt's mid-tempo riffing formula. About halfway through the album, I found myself pining for the death thrashy goodness of old favorites like Legions of Death or Ripping Flesh. (Speaking of which, they re-recorded Flesh for the new album and, of course, it totally crushes everything else on the record. A proper remaster of Slaughter in the Vatican would be much appreciated.) Still, a solid enough comeback.

And now for an exercise in consistency. Still as lean and nasty as they day they crawled out of the gutter.

Thanks for the review. I had listened to Exhorder for the first time after somebody suggested them when I mentioned I was into Pantera recently. Good track, but I agree with you on preferring the old production for them.

Yes, Overkill sounds solid as ever to me. Interesting to see Bittner from Shadows Fall is their new drummer, that name throws me back years. Staying with Nuclearblast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkEXIpym5E0

Cool stuff. Love that little Bathory-esque march that opens and closes the track. Grutle's husky cleans are a highlight as well. Didn't care for the proggy interlude in the middle though (totally kills the atmosphere for me). But overall, another excellent release from the Enslaved camp. Utgard is shaping up to be a good one.

A little less frosty but filled to the brim with epic, wintry atmosphere. One of the best pairings in recent memory.

Yeah the prog break didn't do much for me either, especially the keyboard solo. We know Enslaved are good instrumentalists and that felt forced to remind us. The rest of the track was stellar and I'm curious how their new drummer singer is going to interact with Grutle's renewed interest in clean singing. Ivar Bjornson was just 16 when Vikingligr Veldi was released: that blows my mind.

Speaking of Ivar, this collaboration track with Einar Selvik was very good, thanks for sharing! I was aware this project existed, but never heard it before. Was a little worried until the guitars and drums kicked in at 2 minutes but then was thrilled with the rest of the track, especially the vocals.

Keeping it in Norway.

I admit that I haven't been following Ihsahn's more experimental solo stuff very closely, but I didn't think he would go this far away from the black metal. Maybe it's the cool down from the more old school Telemark. This track's not bad though. Very similar to some of Paul Masvidal's non-Cynic releases (see below), though Ihsahn isn't quite as good of a singer.

Yes, I prefer this to that Ihsahn track because the vocals are better. Not a huge fan of either though, but that type of stuff requires a certain mood. Not in it based on what I just picked.

Intense and dense and technical and brutal, just as this sort of thing should be. Reminds me of these good lads:
