Never got into earlier BTBAM but I have been meaning to check out their descent into pure prog, and this is a good reminder to do so! And obviously I greatly enjoyed that Trivium cut, let's move sideways through 'coredom and check out another band that has been covered here before if memory serves, but I did enjoy this more than the previous mention: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8H2JaF4KGGo

No offense, Zad, but this sounds like pure Hot Topic fodder to me. Wannabe-hardcore kids playing bland background riffs while angsty heart-throb frontman screams about whiny, existential high school BS. I'll take Trivium any day of the week compared these guys.

Keeping it 'core with a new track from one of the old guard:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w55YCDzZjvA

The tremolo riffing over the double kicks is so damn groovy!

Yeah I had this exact August Burns Red track recommended to me this past week. It's good, very crushing while still being melodic, and the clean vocals are sparing. I don't think Goat's Architects was nearly as bad as you did but I find 95% of the time that male clean vocals will bother me in metalcore and so the less the better. Vein is the only major exception I've found thus far.

Enslaved's latest video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92ptxt1FQiU Noticed new drummer is doing cleans while doublebassing in an odd time signature? What a beast!

I love love love Enslaved, but their music videos are consistently terrible even for metal vids. No idea what it is! But the song itself is good; after their dull last album it's good to hear a bit of oomph back and the proggy instrumental skill is well-implemented. Looking forward to their new stuff!

On the theme of sweaty bald singing drummers, two favourite but very different examples for the price of one!

Digging the new song. The atmospheric tremolo flourishes really flesh out the more muscular driving rhythm quite nicely. New drummer has solid cleans which contrast well with Grutle's signature howls. Excellent leadwork by the Iceman to boot. Super stoked if the whole album will be like this.

Fat jokes aside, Autopsy is really out of shape here. They never were super tight but this was a bit too sloppy for a veteran act of their caliber.

Thumbs up for the Genesis mention! Come for the great Phil Collins but stay for lead guitarist Daryl Stuermer. Awesome chops, my man.

Staying old school with another great singing drummer:

I've probably never heard Triumph before and everyone should know by now this style really isn't my preference but very good track nonetheless. I love bands with multiple lead vocalists because it expands a band's potential: here I preferred Moore over Emmett but liked both. Best of all the riffs are catchy.

I was going to post Vried-Lifehunger but Goat already reviewed that. I posted Full of Hell before but this track is very different from the earlier one: no grind here but rather doom/black. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkS7PSB5iH4

Speaking of Vreid, did you catch their livestream the other day?

Full of Hell are an act I really need to explore properly from the start, yet this works for me. Nice drone-y opening, then kicking in like an evil Boris. Not long enough to be real tr00 d00m (the kids can't take anything over ten minutes because they have no attention spans thanks to the internet, don't @ me) but the dip into black metal at the end works well.

I have a small list of picks for this thread that I may or may not be trolling about, but this isn't one, even if it is a step sideways. You'll have heard this before, but not like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h85k0VcFB8c

(guy is worth a YT follow even if you're not a fan of this particular song, his stuff is very interesting)
(and if this has been discussed before/or remastering in general/or AJFA-with-bass etc etc then apologies for forgetting!)

I missed the Vried livestream but someone uploaded it on Youtube, lucky for me. Forest mountain stream was a great idea and worth a little donation from myself. Instantly made me think of Negura Bunget and how they would have thrived doing a livestream in Transylvania since they were similarly connected to the land they originated from. Glad you liked that FoH, ending reminded me of late Xasthur!

AJFA was the epitome of a great album...except for the production. Really nice to hear the bass! You've mentioned this guy before but I just followed him now, if he can work magic with one of the worst productions of all time I ought to check in on everything else he does.

If you are threatening to troll with your upcoming picks then I'm more comfortable posting this 1979 track, which is just a semi-troll. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=331kyZ9OXMc&list=LLZ0AO31Ur3LYR2ISFda1G7A&index=14&t=0s
Edit-Might not show in your country and I can't find a non-official listing in that case skip me and go to your trolling.

The Vreid stream was fun, didn't donate but did buy a shirt from them. So many bands would have made that mountain setting work, not least Windir. Negura B another great pick, really wish Dordeduh get their act together and do something!

Semi-troll, eh? I have tried multiple times to get into Neil Young, and never quite managed to. I like plenty of wacky singers, from Bob Dylan to Eddie Vedder, but never quite managed with NY... Bob and Eddie manage to transcend their physical limitations somehow, BD always has a timelessness to his voice that makes even objectively terrible material like his recent christmas album work, while EV manages to make stuff work thanks to sheer emotion. I need to go on a PJ deep dive, not seriously listened to them in a while.

A NY-kinda-related pick. That I really like, and can get lost in his stuff:

I picked that NY track because of that extremely dirty guitar sound only, agreed that his voice is something of a barrier, as it always was for Bob Dylan as well for me. Less so for me and Eddie Vedder, Vs. is one of my very favorite 'grunge' albums.

Never had a vocal hangup with Van Morrison however. Love the jazz doublebass work of Richard Davis on this as well, and since you went there, I'll counter with this.

I kinda see PJ as closer to classic rock post-Ten than "grunge", which never sat well with me as a genre. What, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Smashing Pumpkins are that close? Let alone Melvins, Tad, etc etc.

This is definitely one of the better Alice Coltrane songs I've heard. I was massively put off her by one album I got randomly which was barely jazz at all, full of culty Hare Krishna-esque chanting. But this is quite nice, although I think it's a point in jazz's favour that it can be so versatile to include the damn harp as an instrument...

I always preferred this guy when it came to out-there jazz: https://youtu.be/dokLwszdUgY

Yeah, 'grunge' doesn't exist beyond being a marketing tool. I read what the experts say before trying a jazz album, because I don't care for an experience like what you described. This album was apparently her masterpiece, and I love this track in particular because of the timbre switchup from piano to harp and sax to flute.

Sun Ra was far more prolific, and apparently had many more highpoints too. Did I deserve a 22 minute track? I could do without the vocals in the title track but the instrumental stuff throughout Space is the Place is pretty spectacular. And the weird flute/sax interplay grabbed me from the beginning on track 3, Discipline.

Apologies, but 22-min jazz tracks are too good not to share!

This Wampyric Bloodlust didn't go the way I thought it would, liked the intro, wasn't sure about the blastbeats, the dips into slower, doomier terrain worked well, enjoyed the ambient bits as much as the blasts. Overall, an act to check out properly!

I felt the same way about Wampryic Bloodlust. Thought the track was going to blast away into mediocre boredom, was pleasantly surprised at something different. This Benighted Leams track was deliciously odd and off-kilter. I loved it! Not sure if I could take a whole album of that bizarre scratchy style, but in a short spurt it was extremely refreshing. I'll certainly check out more, but how familiar with the rest of the band's output are you?

Up to a point, and yes, it is largely like that - the guy behind Benighted Leams is interesting, did cover art for Dimmu's Stormblast, and used to run a UK-based label called Supernal that first released Drudkh etc over here, but it all got a bit weird when a big part of the label seemed more interested in selling Savitri Devi and Miguel Serrano books and similar stuff! He eventually packed it all in and is now obsessed with bodybuilding, the last time I checked his social media out, but did mention he was working on new BL riffs so who knows. I think he even set up a Bandcamp for it, so you can hear the stuff easily.

Hadn't heard of UoU before, assumed it was sludge for the first twenty or so seconds! I dig this sort of chaotic noise rock (? I guess it's not tech-y enough for mathcore) in small doses, reminds a little me of these guys who are obviously on my mind currently:

Thanks for sharing all this info! Hope he gets back into creating strange riffs.

90s era hardcore/grindcore is what they were described as. Pretty interesting I thought. r/hardcore and r/metalcore is in love with all those boring Bring Me the Horizon clones so I've found much heavier and older stuff in the odd core general on /mu/, which is how I came to UoU.

I will certainly check out the rest of this EP! Your review mentioned Coalesce, which I can certainly see, I also heard Portal, and really this isn't too far off from the more grinding Full of Hell/Nails tracks I've heard, though your review notes other tracks are more technical. Cool way to bridge genres in a way that doesn't seem awkward.

This band was apparently a major influence on Napalm Death. https://youtu.be/7zoOsvzXYL8?list=LLZ0A ... 2ISFda1G7A

I dig the saxophone use! Knew the name (am sure ND covered them on one of the Leaders Not Followers releases) but hadn't properly checked them out before, will have to change that. Love the early Killing Joke-esque post-punk skeleton beneath the wackiness, too. Another band I need to relisten to...

Speaking of sax use in metal...

Check the album out, fun act with a few albums, deserve to be bigger than they are.

I honestly can't remember! Had to search to see if I posted that Merlin before, worst case scenario we listen to the same track twice. And I kinda dig this Drab Majesty, although it does kinda seem like a less goth Depeche Mode, which isn't necessarily an improvement. I have a love/hate thing with the 80s, where I hate the basic sound but like acts from the era despite that. As far as retro synth-y acts go, finding this one hard to beat

Yes, this GosT is very good and I like the vocals, but I do miss the guitar like from Drab. Sort of like a Depeche Mode vs Cure scenario? Obviously I liked both bands but need to be a particular mood to go (mostly) sans guitar like with DM. Anyway, I like VR Sex better than Drab (same guitarist/songwriter) and it sounds like you did too based on your comment, which makes sense.

Another selection from the more open-minded NFH. https://youtu.be/N0c7lVHMyaY?list=LLZ0AO31Ur3LYR2ISFda1G7A

Interesting! Hadn't heard of Mr Tumor (?) before, nice bit of smooth rnb (?) but with guitars? Apparently he's an electronic guy? Worthy of further consideration anyway.

Very much a fan of this guy, not heard his latest in its entirety yet but feel like I have at least another 35 years ahead of me delving deep into his stuff:

Some guy in an online discussion was absolutely convinced it was album of the year and was persuasive enough to convince me to listen to a couple tracks. I really liked this one, the other not so much, but interesting nonetheless.

Lyric videos seem like a format suited to Dylan. This song has a nice swing to it and I think age suits Bob's voice. I'll admit it: I liked this.

The self-assuredness of a 79 year old Dylan contrasts nicely with the teenage angst shown here: https://youtu.be/kwxj-9GF1Qs
