Decent song. Soft Machine is whole different story altogether.

They should've written more pop songs!! ("Bands that should've written more pop songs" might be an interesting thread. Victims Family also come to mind because "Son of a Bastard" is so good.)

Ummm... Yeah. Pop is genre that I used to listen back when I was 12 and that was adult pop. I don't mind the Beatles and a couple excellently composed Pop songs here and there by progressive rock bands. Nevertheless, I always look for deeply influenced: classical and jazz in prog rock. The fascinating thing about prog rock is that one can combine any kind of instrument as many bands have done in the past, with magnificent results. Having said that, it it extremely hard to composed pieces of music with the diversity of musical instruments present that results in something, well... fluent!

I'd rather listen to classical and jazz than classical and jazz influenced prog rock. Or musicals. Who needs concept albums when you have Les Miserables?

Musicals and concept albums are basically the same thing. The only difference is the visual aspect of musicals (theater) is gone. You could easily adapt a concept album into a musical (The Wall). So to me its six of one vs half dozen of the other.

It reveals that rock music can encompass more than say, what classical music can express. Jazz and Classical are humungous influences on the music of today but they cannot reveal the essence of creativity within the confinements of say the Baroque period or the Classical period. The Romantic period is another story. Contemporary music holds into account the progression of music throughout 300 to 400 years of culture and development and transforms into pure artistic fountain of devotion to creativity. Progresssive Rock can speak of the metamorphosis of melodies, curves, structures, harmonies, elevations of moods and the abstract.

That's technically true but I think the musicals tend to approach songwriting differently than a band writing a concept album does. Also there's usually more orchestra involved and less guitar/bass/drums. And better trained singers :-P

It's hard to make generalizations though since some musicals are more rock influenced (Jesus Christ Superstar, Rent), and some came before rock even existed. I'd say there's a continuum with opera on one side and concept albums on the other, with musicals somewhere in between.

^^Pretty cool.

I've actually found myself liking some Nero.

A 15 minute collaboration with the London Philharmonic is popular? Dubstep/classical hybridization is clearly the wave of the future.

I didn't just advocate pop music, but a philharmonic collaboration. The ivory tower is still mine alone, to cast aspersions down upon the rest of you scumbag hipsters.

I hear you . It can have different forms, though, this cultness. Listening to cult classical music, or cult jazz music, or cult prog music . Don't let go :P.

Funnily enough I'm the opposite. I listened to prog and thought pop music sucked when I was 14, then started to like pop later. Probably why I think the idea that progressive music is somehow better or more difficult to make than pop music is adolescent and wrong :P

@Noodles:

If you truly believe that Pop music has the complexity, the structure, the dynamics, and the diversity of scales and rhythms of say Classical, Jazz, and Prog Rock music, then you are, indeed, in deep denial.

Yeah when I hear Britney Spear's music it reminds me so much of Chopin and Beethoven. You can hear the similarities :P

Aren't The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, The Beach Boys (etc.) Pop Music?
Like in any other genre, pop has its highlights and its horrors.

I don't, but if you're listening to pop music for complexity and diversity of scales and rhythms, then you're doing it wrong. It'd be like listening to Schoenberg and complaining that I can't sing and dance to it. (Also comparing "Classical" to prog, pop and maybe jazz is a little weird since it's a term for all academic music from hundreds of years, while the others don't encompass nearly as much music.)

Also if you truly believe that Prog music has the complexity, the structure, the dynamics, and the diversity of scales and rhythms of say Classical and Jazz, then you are, indeed, in deep denial. ;-)
