Big release/review weekend for me. Maiden, Nile, Slayer... A new Fuck the Facts somewhere along the line, plus upcoming Horna, Skepticism, Mgla... The realisation I can't cover everything any more is still a sad one.

Do what you can, Zaddy. No worries from the peanut gallery.

Cautiously optimistic about the new Slayer in spite of the very forgettable title track. Hopefully, King and Araya can crank out one more good one to give Hanneman a proper send-off.

Yeah, I've come to terms with it. This great Invisible Oranges piece is a bookmark:

And same, although Angry Metal Guy's review just went up and it got a 1.5/5 from them... Not sure it'll knock Christ Illusion off its perch as best modern Slayer album.

Looks good Zad. Are you doing the new MDB too (out Sept 18) or did Charles reserve that one?

He's not booked it, I'll check with him. Did review the last couple of releases from them I think so a fresh voice might be appreciated by the readers!

Katy Perry gets the Type O Negative treatment by the 10 Second Songs guy. Pretty legit, I must say.

Timberlake's Lonely Island stuff is a lot of fun but you can have the Gayfish scumlord.

On the contrary. The older I have gotten the more extreme and heavier my tastes have gotten. Indeed I have always gotten back to my roots. Classical, progressive BM and Progressive rock. The more complex, the heavier, the better :D

I vote the latter.

There's always the possibility of a third option.

the average song length on JT's latest album is 7 mins

that's pretty prog rock

also his voice n songs are exquisite and its got beats/production you can get lost in, too good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWd4BJRExNw

between stuff like this and kendrick lamar im starting to think pop music is peaking hard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9YdTjIPmfk

like i dont care that much about whats popular but ambitious virtuosos spending weeks at no1 does warm my heart a little

doesnt getting old mean thinking the music of my college years was the golden age, rather than thinking 'hot damn music has gotten good since i graduated'

also my tastes have had a resurgence of harsh vocals in the last few months (kidcrash, killsadie, carrion spring, red scare, self defense family/drug church, pianos become the teeth r all i want n all i need)

im still cool

Evidently, getting old means different things, for different people. Give it some time and the truth will reveal itself. For me, at least, sometimes getting back to the basics of music, the fundamentals: the major chord riffs with bands like Metallica and Sabbath, or the twin-guitar harmonies like Maiden... Is sometimes all I need to hear.

However, most of the time I like to be challenged and the feeling of unfamiliarity, is a sentiment, I urge myself to "discover" rather than things which I've heard frequently in the past. Perhaps a new audio system or new pair of headphones is what you need to hear the many details in the music of say Berlioz or opera, which you haven't heard before. However, I don't know if you still like those stuff.

Stay gold, Noodleboy.

I've been old since I was 14.

i'm still into opera! i've been listening to The Ring in twenty minute chunks while i eat breakfast/lunch, and it's kind of like... when i heard Les Miserables it was everything i ever wanted from a prog rock/metal concept album, but now that i'm getting into The Ring, it's really everything i wanted from a prog rock/metal concept album. especially the 16 hours long part

changing tastes are interesting! i wonder if mine will ever sit still. i kind of hope they will? like if you look at what i listened to five or ten years ago, the amount of it that i still like is pretty small, and the amount that i still listen to regularly (i.e. more than say twice a year) is pretty much nonexistent. i find it kinda sad that i can't stand Devin Townsend anymore and even though Slough Feg's riffs and Mike Scalzi's voice still get me excited, they've probably gotten about an hour of my ears in the last year or two. i am a ravenous beast for new things! and sometimes wish i could sit still! but it's kinda neat that if i listed my TOP FIVE ALBUMS, they'd probably all be things that i heard in the last year or two, or at least were released in the last year or two. and exploring new genres is exciting, like i'm just getting into rap and there's so much of it and so much of it is so angry and man i love anger and swearing. it's like i've always thought lyrics were one of the most important things so why did i never listen to the genre that's famous for its lyrics?? music is endless!!

and there's weird little benchmarks of shifting taste. like when i first heard got into At The Drive-In (thru Mars Volta) i thought In/Casino/Out was a little too raw for my ears, but nowadays i'm really into their debut Acrobatic Tenement, which is even murkier.

stereos are fun! i just biwired my speakers so now the bass sounds clear like dayumm and now i get to sit cross legged on the floor and have new meaningful experiences with all my favourite tunes. i've hit a point where i'll have to spend 500$+ to upgrade my system at this point so i'll probably be sitting on it for a while.
