It would appear to me that the latest trend in Metal is for Metal bands to not play Metal or to at least dilute their sound so much there's only slight traces of Metal. E.g. Opeth, Nachtmystium, Mastodon, The Haunted, Morbid Angel, Queensryche etc etc. Just an observation. |

The other thing those bands all have in common is that they've all displayed a tendency to experiment and grow, and they have all been around for more than a few albums. Stands to reason this would happen. I don't see it as a trend at all. You can find just as many (actually, way more) thrash, death, black metal bands who are churning out the same thing over and over. |

Experimentation is beautiful in everything if the quality if the music doesn't deteriorate during said artistic change, unfortunately most artists change for whatever their reasons, and end up sounding like crap. |

I'd still call Mastodon and Morbid Angel's latest albums metal. Pretty harsh standards if you don't consider them that... |

I think Metal is "cool" in an ironic way, that is to say, not cool at all, but those people who are all about irony will be all "lol metal" because it's silly and they're just so cool that their coolness can survive being tarnished by silly Metal stuff. Eeeugh, fuck hipsters. |

Nah, you got it all upside down Legacy. Metal is teh unkewl music genre so, now that we have a back to the 80s hype (the epitomic era of bad taste and uncoolness), it's logical for metal to be cool again. Not that it'll last... |

The Mastodon one sounds like modern AIC in many places. It's metal in parts and rock in most. Morbid Angel has a few DM bits but its really promoting the industrial rock. Indeed the band themselves have gone to efforts to promote the idea of Morbid Angel as not just a metal band. |
