Agreed, though I think of their albums are at least 7/10 except for At the Gate of Sethu, which was a slight misstep.

Agreed, though I think of their albums are at least 7/10 except for At the Gate of Sethu, which was a slight misstep.

Sethu's biggest problem is it's incredibly thin, tinny audio mix, which is strange because Neil Kernon produced it. The band course corrected on the follow-up but I think Sethu would be regarded much higher if the mix was heavier and better balanced.

Nile has been uniformly solid since the beginning, but I always go back to the pre-Kollias records for their really good stuff. Laureano wasn't as fast or as precise as George, especially live, but his fills and drum patterns were far more diverse and interesting. Kollias comes from the Derek Roddy school of death metal drumming which prizes speed over variety and gets very stale very quickly. His double kicks are quantized as well which takes a bit of shine off his playing.
