Thoughts? I think it is fine on first listen, but getting way overhyped. Should have known that pitchfork gave it a glowing review. Nothing wrong with borrowing from Morbid Angel/Mithras/Immolation and Nile as well, but new Nile blows this away.
I thought their debut was similarly
fine, not got around to this yet, but Pitchfork being all over it is no surprise. The review is actually kinda hilarious - "they're incredible guitar players, just like Kerry King!" "They use synths! Whoa, fretless bass!" Sure, 18 minute death metal songs are kinda rare, but the likes of Pestilence and Cynic were doing this sort of spacey thing in
1993. I like Pitchfork for discovering new stuff, yet the more they cover metal the more they make plain that they really haven't much idea of its history. Nothing against BI, I'll definitely listen to the album.
Yeah, I have to remind myself it isn't BI's fault but do I ever get tired of seeing reviewers who make money for reviewing while being so ignorant. "They remind me of Kerry King and Kirk Hammett!"
They wax poetic about the novelty fretless bass in a death metal band and you wonder have they ever heard Steve Digiorgio or Tony Choi? And space themed death metal, beyond what Pestilence and Cynic were doing in 1993, would it have killed the guy to mention Hypocrisy? When I think space and death metal, no one comes to mind doing it as long or obsessively as Peter Tagtren, and I'd like a signal that someone reviewing death metal at least knows who the fuck he is.
