The origins of Bathory inspired me to make this thread, when Quorthon as so many young bands aspire to reach their creative apex, created black metal from basements and shoddy equipment. Youth and musical inexperience withstanding, and as we've all to expect big label fatcants weren't exactly pining to sign all formative subterranean acrs such as Bathory. What are some albums in spite of vehement birthing pains, that rose to the helm of the genre or were just highly battled for to record. |

Def Leppard with Hysteria. Almost losing their drummer, finally keeping him in the band on a partially electronic kit proved to be decisive in the direction chosen by the band and his producer. |

Rush's 2112 comes to mind. The band was facing strong pressure from their label to make a more accessible, commercial album after the commercial flop Caress of Steel. But instead of playing it safe, they made the most ambitious, progressive album of their career. Quite a bold move, to say the least. If 2112 had bombed commercially, the band would probably have been pretty fucked. |

Venom also come to mind much like Bathory, though due to the overall hostility and ridicule they faced when they first came out. Not too many people were ready to stomach their raunchiness and satanic gimmick, though they'd later go to inspire the creation of bm. |

The band V8 from Argentina released their debut album Luchando por el Metal, one of the first South american metal albums ever and (naturally) a regional classic, when all forms of rock music were banned by the military dictatorship. |

Good point re Venom; Neat records did very little to promote them, also. That's what makes the first few Venom albums so awesome; that fuck it, go for broke attitude. |
