Slipknot - Slipknot
The most punishing BlackDeath Metal album released in the last 30 years. Clearly a materpiece of extremity capturing the essence of the clash of Norwegian Black Metal with Floridian Death Metal, and garnished with darkwave ambience.

Slipknot's Iowa.

I was 16 when I got this album and had a mainstream sensibility to go along with my classic metal palette. I think you either like Slipknot's riffs or you don't. I still think they write great riffs and some great melodies that fit along with them create a good counterpoint.

I'm not saying they are the Beatles, but I think that dynamic is there in that you have at least two people that write completely different things that fail when broken in two or left by itself. But together they are much stronger. The riffs have a sense of melody that goes very well with the vocals. The first album didn't quite have it together and vol. 3 completely failed to deliver that aspect at all.

I could name 100 great albums, but my MO is that I don't typically think much of the "classics" because I don't care about influence or anything other than the songwriting. I will hype something that sells 1000 copies as being better than Led Zeppelin IV until I'm blue in the face.

I think I very much have a producers and a songwriters sensibility in listening to music. IDK, if you want to know what is good in that sense, just ask.

What albums do you think are great but are either panned or ignored by most people when it comes to metal? I personally think that Paradise Lost's Shades of God is their best album behind Gothic, but it never gets nearly as much recognition.

I've said it a million times on here, and I'll say it again: Darkthrone's Hate Them album. It's black as fucking fuck and it's damn catchy to boot. Probably one of my top 3 favorites in their discography, really. Soulside Journey is another one that gets less recognition than it should. Relentless by Pentagram isn't as famous as it should be; if more people knew about it, it'd be in the same league as the best Sabbath albums. X Japan's catalog is sadly obscure outside of Japan. Metallica deserves more fans. Angra's Fireworks album is far better than the haters make it out to be. Mortification's Scrolls of the Megilloth (which was reviewed this week) should be a death metal classic.

Tempted to say Sepultura - Roots... I'll go with that Contra Ignem Fatuum ep that I love and seemingly no-one else does, however.

Somewhere in Time was a very good pick. I think Morbid Angel's Covenant is unfairly overshadowed by their first two.
