We all have those albums that aren't readily processed upon their first encounter. You listen to them however many times it takes, and only after repeated exposure do they finally click. What are some metal or non metal albums that took you a while to fully appreciate?

The first one I can think of is Wintersun. I had always steered clear from it because of the hype and the praise. Then this week I decided to check it out after all. The first time I listened to it I was bored, only Death and the Healing caught my attention. I felt the rest was completely overblown and a total mess. Which didn't make any sense to me actually. If it got so much praise it couldn't be that awful I thought, so I listened to it again and again and again. And just yesterday it all clicked. I bought it the same day.

Quite a few, actually. Satyricon's Now, Diabolical comes to mind first and foremost.

I always think that album is ok, but only because the last song is the best one!

Certainly Under a Funeral Moon. Used to think it was the ranga cousin of Darkthrone albums but now I think it's the best one.

Converge--Jane Doe, and Converge--You Fail Me. Actually didn't like either at first, which is weird now because they're probably my two favorite albums of all time.

Minus the Bear - Menos El Oso, thought they were emo garbage first time I heard them because I was a wannabe metalhead doof.

Converge - Jane Doe, thought it was raping my ears the first few times I heard it.

Paramore - Riot!, took me a while to acknowledge my inner 13 year old girl.

The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute/De-Loused in the Comatorium, took me a while to appreciate the psychodelick rock and noise sections as well as Cedric's voice.

Trivium - Shogun, took me a while to like a band as gay as Trivium but then I saw this video and did lol at the last 2-3 minutes so I thought they were way cooler afterwards http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRTYS2Aes-A

Most of the time these happen when I go into the album with expectations that it doesn't meet.

Akercocke -- Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone is probably the most recent example I can think of. When a band has a really unique style, it can take me a while to get used to it and really listen to what they're doing. And indeed, Words That Go Unspoken is a fucking fantastic album.

Also, I didn't really need much of a warmup to Jane Doe. Maybe because I was already used to really extreme music by the time I listened to it.

Rush - Presto

I was convinced the first time I listened to it that it was one of the dullest albums ever, but it became one of my favorite albums ever soon afterwards.

Hard to think of specific albums but I didn't get The Doors at first but eventually they became one of my favourite bands and first time I heard Slayer it was to extreme but once I got them it was a big step towards extreme metal.

Same here. The first listen was like 'ok he's real intense' and then Homewrecker hits and it's like I want to be that intense.

I wish I felt the same way for that album, but as soon as I heard the vocalist howl "I am mightttyy", I just laughed at the album and forgot it ever existed. As for uneasy albums, I have to go with The Erosion of Sanity, while I still think the band is incredibly overrated, it finally clicked as solid death metal not too long ago. Also Xasthur's "Telepathic with the deceased", took quite a while to soak in though now I consider it another quality album

+1

Strangely enough, I disliked Operation: Mindcrime the first time I heard it, and now I pretty much consider it the greatest metal album.
